A car horn that stops working in the UAE is a common fault, particularly in older vehicles exposed to UAE heat. Before spending money on parts, it helps to understand why horns fail and how to diagnose the problem systematically. This guide covers all the common causes of horn failure in UAE vehicles.
1. Blown Horn Fuse — Check First, Costs AED 5
The horn fuse is the first thing to check when a horn stops working. The fuse box is usually located under the dashboard or in the engine bay and is labelled in the vehicle manual. A blown fuse means either the horn unit drew too much current when failing, or there is a short circuit in the horn wiring. Replace the fuse (AED 5 from any UAE petrol station or auto parts shop). If it blows again immediately when you press the horn, there is a wiring short that needs professional diagnosis.
2. Failed Horn Relay
The horn relay controls power to the horn and can fail independently of the fuse. The relay is typically in the main fuse and relay box under the bonnet. Relays cost AED 20 to AED 50 and can be swapped with an identical relay from another circuit to test (check the fuse box diagram for a relay with the same part number). If swapping fixes the horn, replace the relay.
3. Horn Unit Burned Out from UAE Heat
The horn unit itself is an electromagnetic coil that vibrates a metal disc to produce sound. UAE heat (45 to 50 degrees Celsius engine bay temperatures reaching 80 to 100 degrees Celsius) can burn out the coil winding or seize the vibrating disc. If the fuse and relay are fine but the horn does not sound even when 12V is applied directly to the horn terminals, the horn unit has failed. Replacement: AED 40 to AED 200 for a new unit plus AED 50 to AED 150 labour.
4. Corroded Horn Wiring and Earth Connection
Horns have a power wire and an earth (ground) connection to the vehicle body. The earth connection is often a bolt on the bodywork near the horn that corrodes over time, especially in the coastal humidity of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. A corroded earth causes high resistance that prevents the horn from sounding. Cleaning the earth connection contact is free. Replacing a corroded earth wire costs AED 20 to AED 80 in parts and 20 minutes labour.
5. Faulty Horn Pad or Clock Spring in Steering Wheel
On vehicles with airbag steering wheels, the horn circuit runs through a clock spring (spiral cable) that connects the rotating steering wheel to the fixed wiring of the vehicle. Clock spring failure means pressing the horn pad does not complete the circuit. If the horn sounds when you touch the two horn terminals directly under the bonnet but not when pressing the steering wheel button, the clock spring or horn pad is faulty.
