Car Suspension Types Explained for UAE Drivers (2026)

Understanding the suspension type on your UAE vehicle helps you make informed decisions about repairs, upgrades, and what to expect from your mechanic. Different suspension designs have different component sets, service requirements, and repair costs. UAE drivers encounter all the main suspension designs across the range of vehicles popular in the market.

MacPherson Strut (Most Common in UAE)

The MacPherson strut is the most common front suspension design on UAE economy and mid-range vehicles. A single strut assembly (combining the shock absorber and a structural support for the wheel) replaces the upper control arm and upper ball joint of a double-wishbone system. UAE examples: Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Sportage, Nissan Altima, most hatchbacks. The strut is the main wear item — a UAE strut replacement costs AED 200-500 per corner including the spring and bearing.

Double Wishbone (UAE SUVs and Premium)

Double wishbone suspension uses upper and lower control arms (wishbones) with ball joints at each end connecting to the steering knuckle. This design allows more precise wheel geometry control and is used on UAE premium and performance vehicles, and on many UAE 4×4 vehicles that require suspension travel for off-road use. UAE examples: Toyota Land Cruiser 200/300, Nissan Patrol Y62, Lexus LX, BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Both upper and lower ball joints, both control arm bushings, and the shock absorber are serviceable components. Use GarageBuddy to find UAE garages for suspension service on any vehicle type.
