Car Steering Wheel Problems in UAE — Causes and Solutions (2026)

Steering problems in UAE vehicles range from minor annoyances to serious safety issues. UAE roads, including high-speed highways, uneven surfaces in older areas, and the occasional off-road excursion, create specific wear patterns on steering components. Recognising warning signs early prevents costly repairs and keeps the vehicle safe to drive.

Steering Wheel Vibration

Vibration through the steering wheel at highway speeds is one of the most common UAE driver complaints. The most frequent cause is wheel imbalance, which is easily corrected at any UAE tyre shop for AED 30-80 per wheel. If vibration persists after balancing, worn tie rod ends, a damaged CV joint, or worn wheel bearings are likely culprits. UAE heat causes tyre rubber to lose elasticity faster, increasing the chance of flat spots and imbalance developing between rotations.

Heavy or Stiff Steering

Steering that requires more effort than usual indicates a problem with the power steering system. Low power steering fluid from a leak, a failing power steering pump, or a degraded power steering rack are the main causes. In UAE heat, power steering fluid breaks down faster and rubber seals in the pump and rack shrink and crack, causing leaks. Power steering fluid should be checked at every service and topped up if needed.

Steering Pulling to One Side

A vehicle that pulls consistently to one side typically needs a wheel alignment adjustment. UAE roads, particularly in areas with construction and repaired surfaces, disturb wheel alignment regularly. Potholes, kerb strikes, and sand drift crossings all shift alignment angles. Correct alignment also reduces tyre wear, which is important given the high cost of tyre replacement in UAE.

Loose or Wandering Steering

Excessive free play in the steering wheel before the wheels respond indicates worn tie rod ends, a worn steering rack, or loose steering column components. This is a safety concern and should be inspected immediately. UAE vehicles used on rough desert or mountain roads are more prone to worn steering components due to the additional shock loading compared to pure highway driving.
