Car Battery Corrosion: Why It Happens in UAE and How to Fix It
Battery terminal corrosion is a common problem for UAE drivers. The white, blue, or grey powdery deposits that build up on and around battery terminals look harmless, but they significantly reduce electrical conductivity and can cause intermittent starting problems, electrical faults, and premature battery failure if left unchecked.
Why UAE Conditions Cause More Corrosion
UAE combines two factors that accelerate corrosion: high temperatures and coastal humidity. Heat causes battery acid inside the cell to vaporise more rapidly. This acid vapour escapes through battery vents and settles on the exposed metal terminals and cable clamps. In coastal cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the salt-laden humid air reacts with the acid deposits to form compounds that are particularly corrosive to the lead terminals and copper cable clamps.
Types of Terminal Corrosion
White or bluish-grey powder on the positive terminal is usually lead sulphate, a product of acid vapour reacting with air. Copper-coloured green deposits on the negative terminal indicate copper sulphate forming where the copper cable core contacts the lead terminal. Both types increase resistance, though positive terminal corrosion is more common in UAE due to acid-driven reactions under heat.
How to Spot Battery Corrosion
Open the bonnet and look at the battery terminals. Any powdery deposit, crust, or discolouration around the terminal posts or cable clamps is corrosion. On badly corroded terminals the cable clamp may feel loose despite being tight, because the corrosion buildup has actually expanded and pushed the connection. You may also notice sluggish starting or dimming lights when the engine is cranking.
Cleaning Battery Terminals
Disconnect the negative cable first, then positive. Mix baking soda with water to form a paste and apply it to the corroded areas — it will fizz as it neutralises the acid compounds. Scrub with an old toothbrush or a terminal cleaning brush, rinse with water, and dry completely. Reconnect positive first, then negative. Apply battery terminal grease, petroleum jelly, or a dedicated anti-corrosion spray to protect the clean terminals.
Prevention in UAE Conditions
Regular inspection every 3 months is recommended in UAE. Using a sealed or maintenance-free AGM battery instead of an older flooded-cell type reduces acid vapour emissions significantly. Parking in the shade where possible also reduces battery temperature and slows corrosion build-up.
