ABS Sensor Failure Signs Every UAE Driver Should Know

The ABS sensor monitors each wheel speed and feeds this data to the ABS control module. A failing sensor disables the anti-lock braking system, removing a critical safety feature especially during emergency stops on UAE roads.

ABS Warning Light

The most obvious sign is the ABS warning light on the dashboard — an amber or yellow light with the letters ABS inside. A fault code stored in the ABS module will identify which specific sensor has failed and on which corner.

Multiple Warning Lights

ABS sensors are shared with the stability control and traction control systems. A failed sensor often illuminates all three warning lights simultaneously: ABS, ESC, and TCS. Losing both ABS and stability control in UAE highway conditions is a serious safety concern.

ABS Activating at Low Speed

A partially failed sensor can send erratic signals to the ABS module, causing the system to activate during normal gentle braking. You may feel the brake pedal pulsating when stopping in traffic even though the wheels are not skidding. This is a sign the sensor is producing incorrect data.

Speedometer Issues

On some vehicles, wheel speed sensors also feed the speedometer. A failed sensor on these systems can cause the speedometer to read incorrectly or drop to zero intermittently.

Common Causes in UAE

ABS sensors are mounted close to the wheel and are exposed to road debris, dust, and heat. The sensor reluctor ring — a toothed ring attached to the axle or hub — can accumulate metal dust or rust particles that disrupt the sensor signal. Physical damage from a kerb strike or speed bump impact can also break the wiring harness that connects the sensor to the ABS module.

Is It Safe to Drive with the ABS Light On?

The regular brakes still function, so the car can be driven short distances. However, the anti-lock function is disabled, meaning in an emergency stop the wheels can lock and steering control is lost. In UAE summer conditions on hot tarmac, stopping distances increase significantly without ABS. Have the sensor replaced as soon as possible.
