Car Oil Leak Causes in UAE: Where to Look and What to Do
An oil puddle under the car, a burning oil smell from the engine bay, or an oil level that drops faster than it should are all signs of an oil leak. UAE heat is a major contributing factor to oil leaks, as rubber gaskets, seals, and hoses degrade significantly faster at sustained high temperatures. This guide covers the most common oil leak sources in UAE cars.
Valve Cover Gasket
The most common oil leak source on many engines is the valve cover gasket. Heat cycling causes the gasket to harden, crack, and shrink. Oil leaks from around the valve cover and may drip onto the hot exhaust, producing a burning smell. Valve cover gasket replacement is one of the more affordable leak repairs, typically AED 200-600 depending on vehicle.
Oil Pan Gasket or Drain Plug
The oil pan gasket seals the bottom of the engine. Degradation or impact damage (from UAE speed bumps at speed) can crack the gasket or the pan itself. The drain plug washer should be replaced every oil change — a common shortcut is to reuse the old washer, which leads to slow seepage.
Front or Rear Crankshaft Seals
Crankshaft seals seal the front and rear of the engine where the crankshaft exits the engine block. UAE heat causes rubber seals to harden and shrink over time. A leaking front seal contaminates the serpentine belt. A leaking rear main seal contaminates the clutch on manual transmission vehicles. Both require prompt repair.
Camshaft Seals
Similar to crankshaft seals, camshaft seals degrade in heat. Leaks typically appear at the front of the engine near the timing cover and may be visible as an oil film accumulating around the seal.
Oil Cooler Lines (Automatic Transmission)
Vehicles with automatic transmissions have oil cooler lines running to and from the radiator. These rubber lines degrade with heat and age, developing pinhole leaks. ATF leaks are typically reddish and accumulate under the front of the vehicle.
How Serious Is an Oil Leak?
All oil leaks are worth repairing. A slow leak that causes gradual oil consumption is an engine-killer if the level drops below the minimum without the driver noticing. In UAE heat, oil degradation and consumption happen faster than in cooler climates. Use GarageBuddy to find oil leak specialists across all seven UAE emirates.
