Car Driveline Noise Guide for UAE Drivers: Clunks, Clicks, and Howls (2026)
Different drivetrain noises point to different components. Understanding the difference between a clunk, a click, a howl, and a vibration helps UAE drivers describe the fault accurately and get the right repair. This guide covers the most common drivetrain noises on UAE 4WD and rear-wheel-drive vehicles.
Clunking When Pulling Away or Under Braking
A clunk when pulling away from a stop or when changing between acceleration and deceleration is almost always a worn universal joint (U-joint) in the prop shaft. The joint allows the shaft to operate through angles, and when the needle bearings inside are worn or dried out, there is momentary play as the load direction reverses. This is one of the most common drivetrain faults on high-mileage Toyota Land Cruisers, Nissan Patrols, and Mitsubishi Pajeros in UAE.
Clicking in Turns
A clicking noise in tight turns, especially on full lock, is the classic symptom of a worn outer CV (constant velocity) joint on a front-wheel-drive or part-time 4WD vehicle in 4WD mode. The clicking is caused by the CV joint operating at too great an angle with worn internal components. On rear-wheel-drive vehicles, a click from the rear in turns suggests a worn rear CV joint (if fitted) or a differential issue.
Howling or Whining Under Load
A continuous howl or whine that changes with road speed but not engine speed (i.e., is present in neutral at the same road speed) indicates a wheel bearing fault. A howl that is present only under load (acceleration) and disappears at the same speed when coasting suggests a differential ring-and-pinion gear fault, often from low oil or worn gears. A differential gear howl typically worsens progressively and should be investigated before it leads to complete differential failure.
