Types of Speed-Sensitive Steering
Hydraulic variable power steering (HVPS): Used on older vehicles and still common on large SUVs like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol. A flow control valve varies the hydraulic fluid supply to the rack based on a vehicle speed signal, reducing assist at higher speeds. The pump is always driven by the engine via a belt. Electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS): The pump is driven by an electric motor rather than the engine belt. The controller varies the pump speed based on vehicle speed and steering demand. More efficient than hydraulic VPS as the pump only runs when steering is needed. Common on some Audi, Volkswagen, and BMW models. Electric power steering (EPS) with speed sensitivity: The most modern type. No hydraulic system. An electric motor mounted on the steering column or rack provides assistance, and the ECU varies the motor torque based on vehicle speed. The majority of vehicles manufactured after 2015 use this system.
