Electric Power Steering Fault in UAE: Causes, Symptoms and Fixes

4 Jul 2026 4 min read

Electric power steering (EPS) is fitted to most new cars sold in the UAE and has largely replaced hydraulic power steering. While EPS is generally reliable and maintenance-free compared to hydraulic systems, it can develop faults that trigger a dashboard warning light and cause heavy or unresponsive steering. Knowing what causes EPS faults in UAE conditions helps you get the right repair quickly.

What Is Electric Power Steering?

Electric power steering uses an electric motor — mounted either on the steering column or directly on the steering rack — to provide steering assistance. The system reads input from a torque sensor on the steering column and a vehicle speed sensor, then calculates how much assistance the motor should provide. EPS uses no power steering fluid, no hydraulic pump, and no drive belt. This makes it simpler and more fuel-efficient than hydraulic systems under normal conditions.

Common Causes of EPS Faults in UAE

UAE driving conditions create specific failure modes for EPS systems that are less common in cooler climates.

1. Overheating Due to Extreme Heat

Engine bay temperatures in UAE summer regularly exceed 80 degrees Celsius. EPS motors and control modules can overheat during prolonged slow-speed driving — particularly in heavy traffic in Deira, industrial Sharjah, or Musaffah in Abu Dhabi. When the EPS motor overheats, the system reduces or cuts assistance temporarily until the motor cools. This triggers the warning light.

2. Weak or Failing Battery

EPS systems rely entirely on electrical power from the car battery and alternator. A weak battery cannot supply sufficient current for the EPS motor, causing intermittent faults and warning lights. UAE heat degrades car batteries significantly faster than in cooler climates — average UAE battery life is 2 to 3 years versus 4 to 5 years in Europe or North America. This is one of the most common and easily overlooked EPS fault causes.

3. Faulty Torque Sensor

The torque sensor sits on the steering column and measures how hard the driver is turning the wheel. A damaged or miscalibrated torque sensor sends incorrect data to the EPS control module, causing erratic or absent steering assistance. Torque sensor replacement requires careful recalibration after fitting.

4. EPS Control Module Failure

The EPS ECU (electronic control unit) processes all sensor data and commands the motor. Module failures can sometimes be resolved through software reset or ECU reflashing at a workshop with the correct diagnostic equipment. In other cases, the module requires physical replacement.

5. Corroded Electrical Connections

Salt air in coastal UAE cities — Dubai Marina, Abu Dhabi Corniche, Fujairah waterfront areas — corrodes electrical connectors over time. Corroded EPS motor or sensor connectors cause intermittent faults that can be difficult to diagnose without thorough inspection.

EPS Fault Warning Signs

The EPS warning light (usually a steering wheel icon with an exclamation mark) is the primary alert. Other signs include steering that suddenly feels heavier than normal, assistance cutting out at parking speeds, and unusual noises from the steering column or motor area when turning.

EPS Fault Repair Cost in UAE

Torque sensor replacement typically costs AED 400 to AED 1,200. EPS motor replacement costs AED 1,500 to AED 4,000 depending on vehicle brand and whether the motor is available separately or only as part of the rack assembly. EPS control module replacement costs AED 800 to AED 2,500. A battery replacement to resolve battery-related EPS faults costs AED 300 to AED 700.

What to Do When the EPS Light Comes On

Do not ignore the EPS warning light. Some causes — such as a low battery — are minor, but others can result in a sudden loss of steering assistance at speed. Have the fault codes read with a diagnostic scanner as soon as possible. GarageBuddy connects you with EPS-capable workshops across all UAE emirates for fast diagnosis and repair.
