Why Is My Steering Wheel Hard to Turn in UAE?

4 Jul 2026 3 min read

A steering wheel that is suddenly or progressively harder to turn is one of the most common driving concerns reported by UAE car owners. The cause can be as simple as low tyre pressure or as serious as a failing power steering system. This guide covers the most likely causes in order of simplicity, from the cheapest to check to the most expensive to repair.

1. Check Tyre Pressure First

Significantly underinflated front tyres increase rolling resistance and steering effort. This is a free fix. Check front tyre pressure (refer to the sticker inside the driver door jamb for the correct pressure) and inflate to specification. UAE summer heat causes tyre pressure to fluctuate, so check pressure monthly when the tyres are cold.

2. Power Steering Fluid Level

On hydraulic power steering vehicles, a low fluid level reduces pump output and makes steering noticeably heavier. Check the power steering fluid reservoir (usually a small, capped container near the engine) and top up if the level is below the MIN mark. Note that if the fluid level dropped due to a leak, simply topping up is a temporary measure — the source of the leak must also be repaired.

3. Electric Power Steering Fault

Most modern UAE vehicles have electric power steering with no fluid reservoir. If the EPS motor overheats (common in stop-and-go traffic in Dubai and Sharjah during summer), the system reduces assistance output, making the steering feel heavier. An EPS warning light usually appears on the dashboard. If the light is on, have the fault codes read by a qualified mechanic immediately.

4. Failing Power Steering Pump

On hydraulic systems, a worn or failing pump cannot generate adequate pressure. Heavy steering combined with a whining noise from the engine bay when turning is the classic sign of a failing pump. Pump replacement typically costs AED 800 to AED 3,000 in UAE.

5. Seized Steering Column or Rack Components

A seized universal joint in the steering column, or internal corrosion or damage in the steering rack, creates mechanical binding that adds resistance to steering movement regardless of the power steering system state. This is less common than the above causes but does occur in older vehicles and in vehicles that have been driven in saltwater-affected areas near the UAE coast.

When to See a Mechanic

If the steering becomes hard suddenly, or if an EPS warning light is on, go to a workshop promptly. Do not attempt to drive long distances or at highway speed with heavy steering as it reduces your ability to react in an emergency. GarageBuddy helps UAE drivers find trusted workshops for steering diagnosis across all seven emirates.
