Disadvantages: more play in the steering (some looseness is normal); less precise and direct feel than a steering rack; heavier and more complex linkage system.
Key Difference: How They Feel to Drive
Rack-and-pinion steering feels direct and responsive. Small steering inputs produce immediate wheel response. A steering box system has a more relaxed, less direct feel, and some play in the steering wheel is completely normal (up to about 25 mm at the rim is acceptable). When a steering box wears out, this play becomes excessive, sometimes reaching 50 to 100 mm or more at the steering wheel rim before the wheels respond.
How to Tell Which System Your Vehicle Has
If you can see a long metal bar (the rack) running horizontally across the engine bay near the front wheels, connected by two shorter rods to the wheels, that is a rack-and-pinion system. If instead you see a boxy metal housing on the driver side near the front suspension with a large arm (pitman arm) extending from it and connecting to a more complex rod arrangement, that is a steering box.
