Car Steering Wheel Play: Causes and How to Fix It in UAE (2026)

Steering wheel play — the amount the wheel can be moved without the front tyres responding — is a common issue on older and high-mileage vehicles in the UAE. Understanding the causes and knowing when to seek a repair is important for safety on UAE roads.

What Is Steering Play?

When you turn the steering wheel slightly in either direction and the vehicle does not immediately respond, that initial free movement is called steering play or steering slack. A very small amount of play is normal and built into every steering system. However, more than approximately 25 to 30 mm of free movement at the wheel rim before the wheels respond is generally considered excessive and a sign of wear in the steering system.

Causes of Excessive Steering Play on UAE Vehicles

The cause of steering play depends on the steering system type. On rack and pinion systems, the most common causes are worn inner or outer tie rod end ball joints, internal wear in the steering rack allowing excessive movement, worn or loose steering coupler and intermediate shaft joints, and in some cases loose rack mounting bushings. On recirculating ball steering gearbox systems, which are common on older Land Cruisers, Nissan Patrols, and other popular UAE 4WD vehicles, the gearbox internal clearances increase with wear, and the gearbox preload can be adjusted to reduce play within limits. On these systems, worn idler arm, drag link, and pitman arm ball joints also contribute to play.

Steering Gearbox Preload Adjustment in UAE

On vehicles with a recirculating ball steering gearbox, a qualified mechanic can adjust the gearbox preload to reduce steering play. This adjustment tightens the internal clearance in the gearbox and is a legitimate and cost-effective way to reduce play on higher-mileage 4WD vehicles before the gearbox requires replacement. The adjustment must be done carefully to avoid over-tightening, which causes binding. The service typically costs AED 100 to AED 300 at an independent garage in the UAE.

Is Steering Play Checked in RTA Inspections?

Yes. The UAE RTA periodic vehicle inspection checks steering play as part of the safety assessment. Excessive play can result in a vehicle failing its inspection. Addressing steering play promptly maintains both vehicle safety and roadworthiness.
