Power Steering Fluid Types Explained for UAE Drivers (2026)

Not all power steering fluid is the same, and using the wrong type can damage seals and cause leaks. This guide explains the common power steering fluid types found in vehicles driven in the UAE and how to identify what your car needs.

Why Fluid Type Matters

Power steering fluid lubricates the pump, rack seals, and all internal components it contacts. Different fluid specifications use different additive packages and base oils, and the seals in power steering systems are designed to swell or maintain their shape with a specific fluid chemistry. Using an incompatible fluid can cause seals to swell (causing blockage) or shrink (causing leaks). In UAE heat, where the fluid is under greater thermal stress, using the correct type is particularly important.

Common Power Steering Fluid Types in UAE

ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid): Many Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and other Japanese vehicles specify Dexron II or Dexron III ATF as their power steering fluid. This is the most common specification across the large Japanese vehicle fleet in the UAE. Dexron-compatible ATF from reputable brands is widely available at UAE auto parts stores.

Manufacturer-specific synthetic power steering fluid: European vehicles including Mercedes-Benz (MB 236.3), BMW, Volkswagen, and Audi typically specify a synthetic power steering fluid to a specific manufacturer standard. The most common European specification is Pentosin CHF 11S. Using a non-synthetic ATF in these systems can damage seals and is not recommended.

OEM-branded fluids: Some manufacturers specify their own branded fluid, such as Honda PSF or Toyota PSF. These are compatible with many aftermarket alternatives to the same specification, but mixing with ATF is not recommended.

How to Identify the Correct Fluid for Your Car in UAE

The vehicle owner handbook specifies the correct power steering fluid type and, where applicable, the approved product standards. The specification is also often printed on the power steering fluid reservoir cap. When in doubt, a UAE garage with your vehicle information can confirm the correct specification before any top-up or flush is performed.
