Warning Signs Your Car Needs Wheel Alignment in UAE

Most UAE drivers do not realise their wheels are misaligned until a tyre shows obvious edge wear or the mechanic mentions it at a service. By then, money has been wasted on premature tyre wear. Recognising the warning signs early and acting on them quickly saves money and keeps your vehicle safe on UAE roads. This guide covers every symptom of wheel alignment problems and what they mean.

Vehicle Pulling to One Side

The most obvious alignment symptom is a vehicle that drifts toward one side of the lane when you drive straight on a flat road. On a flat, smooth straight road, you should be able to hold the wheel lightly with minimal correction. If the car consistently drifts left or right when you relax your grip, alignment is likely out of specification. Note that a road crown can cause mild drift toward the edge on intentionally sloped roads — true alignment pull is consistent on flat surfaces and motorway lanes.

Off-Centre Steering Wheel

When your wheels are correctly aligned and the vehicle is going straight, the steering wheel should be centred. If the logo or spoke on the wheel is noticeably rotated when driving straight on a flat road, alignment is off. This often happens when the rear thrust angle is incorrect and the front wheels have been set to compensate, leaving the steering column slightly turned.

Uneven Tyre Wear

Wheel alignment directly causes characteristic tyre wear patterns. Excessive toe-in or toe-out causes feathered or sawtooth wear across the tyre tread. Incorrect camber wears the inner or outer edge of the tyre significantly faster than the rest. If any of your tyres shows heavy wear on one edge while the other edges look nearly new, have alignment checked before the tyre is replaced, otherwise the new tyre will wear just as rapidly.

Steering Wheel Vibration

Alignment problems can cause the steering wheel to vibrate, though vibration is more commonly caused by wheel imbalance. If balancing the wheels does not resolve the vibration, have the alignment checked. Toe errors can cause a shimmy effect at certain speeds that mimics imbalance vibration.

Wandering or Unstable Straight-Line Driving

If the vehicle feels like it wanders slightly and requires constant small steering corrections to stay in lane at motorway speed, caster or rear thrust angle is likely out of specification. This is particularly common in vehicles that have been in a minor rear collision or have worn rear suspension bushes.

Vehicle Crab Walking

If you look at the vehicle from behind while someone else drives it slowly, or notice the rear of the car appears to track slightly offset from the front, the rear thrust angle is significantly wrong. The vehicle crab walks because the rear wheels are pushing the car sideways instead of straight ahead.
