Drum Brakes vs Disc Brakes: The Key Differences
Most modern cars use disc brakes on the front axle and either drum or disc brakes on the rear. Understanding the difference between the two systems helps UAE car owners know what to expect from servicing costs, brake feel, and maintenance intervals.
A disc brake system uses a flat circular rotor attached to the wheel hub. A drum brake system uses a hollow cylinder (the drum) that rotates with the wheel. Drum brakes require removing the drum to inspect shoe thickness, check wheel cylinder condition, inspect the self-adjuster, and clean the interior. This makes drum brake servicing slightly more time-consuming and requires attention to more components.
