What the Catalytic Converter Does in a UAE Vehicle
Every petrol and hybrid vehicle on UAE roads carries a catalytic converter as part of its emissions control system. Its job is to convert the three primary harmful exhaust gases into less harmful substances before they exit the tailpipe. Carbon monoxide (CO) is oxidised to carbon dioxide (CO2). Unburned hydrocarbons (HC) are oxidised to water and CO2. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are reduced to nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2). This three-way conversion process gives the device its common name: the three-way catalyst.
The chemical reactions occur on the surface of a ceramic honeycomb structure coated with a thin wash-coat of platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The honeycomb geometry creates an enormous surface area in a compact space. Proper operation requires the catalyst to be at working temperature, above 400 degrees Celsius, which is why emissions are highest during the first few minutes of a cold start before the catalyst lights off.
Common Catalytic Converter Faults in UAE Cars
Engine misfires are the leading cause of catalytic converter failure in the UAE. An engine misfire sends unburned fuel into the exhaust stream, where it ignites inside the hot converter and creates temperatures high enough to melt the ceramic honeycomb. UAE vehicles that have been running on worn spark plugs or with ignition problems are at particular risk. Coolant leaks that allow antifreeze into the combustion chamber create a similar problem, coating the honeycomb with a residue that blocks the active surface.
Physical damage from speed bump impacts is also common. The converter body can crack or the internal substrate can fracture, producing the distinctive rattling noise that many UAE drivers notice on startup. Oil consumption in older engines coats the catalyst surface with ash deposits, gradually reducing efficiency below the threshold required to pass an emissions test.
Diagnosing a Catalytic Converter Fault
The diagnostic process begins with an OBD-II scan to read fault codes. P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold, bank 1) and P0430 (bank 2) are the standard codes for a converter that is failing the downstream oxygen sensor plausibility check. A mechanic can then perform a backpressure test, measuring exhaust restriction upstream of the converter versus downstream. A blocked converter will show a significant pressure differential. Visual inspection of the converter under the vehicle can reveal physical damage or overheating discolouration.

Aftermarket catalytic converter replacement for common UAE vehicles including Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and Hyundai Tucson typically costs AED 1,200 to AED 2,500 all-in for parts and labour. European vehicles are more expensive: AED 2,500 to AED 6,000 for aftermarket units, and AED 5,000 to AED 15,000 for OEM parts from dealers. Diesel particulate filter (DPF) cleaning, which is the diesel equivalent for some European models, costs AED 800 to AED 1,500 for a professional cleaning service.
