UAE Summer Car Maintenance Guide: Protecting Your Car in Extreme Heat
UAE summers are among the most demanding environments for vehicles anywhere in the world. Ambient temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees Celsius, road surface temperatures can reach 70 degrees or above, and humidity in coastal areas creates additional stress on electrical components. This guide covers the essential maintenance steps that protect your vehicle during UAE summer and prevent costly breakdowns.
Engine Cooling System
The cooling system is the single most critical system to maintain before UAE summer. Inspect coolant level and concentration. Use a 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol coolant and distilled water which raises the coolant boiling point to approximately 108 degrees Celsius. Check for leaks at hoses, clamps, the radiator, and the water pump. Inspect the radiator for blockages caused by debris accumulation. If coolant has not been replaced in 3 years or 60,000 km, flush and renew it before summer begins. Inspect the radiator fan and fan clutch operation. A seized or slipping fan clutch is a common UAE overheat cause on older vehicles.
Engine Oil and Lubrication
Switch to a full synthetic engine oil if not already using one. Synthetic oils maintain their viscosity and protective properties at sustained high temperatures far better than conventional or semi-synthetic alternatives. Consider using the higher viscosity option within the manufacturer-permitted range (for example, 5W-40 instead of 5W-30 if both are permitted) for additional protection during summer city driving. Reduce oil change intervals to 5,000 km in UAE summer conditions with frequent short urban trips.
Air Conditioning System
The AC system runs continuously for six or more months of the year in the UAE, making it a high-wear component. Service the AC system before peak summer: check refrigerant level and top up if needed, inspect the compressor belt and clutch, replace the cabin air filter, and clean the condenser fins if clogged with dust. A properly maintained AC system also runs more efficiently and reduces the fuel consumption penalty of AC use, which can reach 15 percent in stop-go traffic.
Battery
Heat kills car batteries in the UAE. Have your battery load-tested at any garage or battery shop. A battery showing 80 percent or less of its rated capacity should be replaced before summer. AGM and EFB batteries handle UAE heat better than conventional flooded batteries. Check battery terminal condition and clean any corrosion with a wire brush and terminal protector spray. Park in shade whenever possible to reduce parasitic heat loading on the battery.
Tyres
Check tyre pressure weekly during summer. Heat increases pressure and underinflated tyres are particularly prone to heat-related failure at UAE road temperatures. Inspect tread depth and sidewall condition. Look for small cracks in the sidewall rubber which indicate heat degradation. Replace any tyre with visible cord, bulges, or cracks. Ensure tyres are rated for speeds appropriate to UAE driving conditions (minimum H or V rating for motorway use).
Brakes
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and its boiling point drops accordingly. In UAE summer conditions with frequent heavy braking in traffic, degraded brake fluid can vapourise under hard braking, causing sudden pedal fade. Replace brake fluid every 2 years regardless of mileage. Have brake pads and discs inspected before summer if the vehicle has not been serviced recently.
