Car Emission Test Cost in UAE 2025

Vehicle emission testing is a mandatory part of the annual Tasjeel or Tamam vehicle inspection in the UAE. Every registered vehicle must pass an exhaust emissions check before the Mulkiya (vehicle registration) can be renewed. Understanding what is tested, what causes failure, and the cost of emission-related repairs helps UAE drivers prepare their vehicles and avoid the delays and additional costs of a failed inspection.

What the UAE Emission Test Checks

At Tasjeel and Tamam inspection centers, petrol vehicles are tested for carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) concentrations at idle and at a specified elevated engine speed. The readings must fall within the pass limits set by the UAE traffic authorities for the vehicle category. Diesel vehicles are tested for exhaust smoke opacity using a free-acceleration test where the engine is briefly revved without load and the opacity of the exhaust smoke is measured by a smoke meter. A vehicle producing clearly visible black or blue smoke will fail. Additionally, many UAE inspection centers check whether the vehicle has any active fault codes via the OBD port; an active fault code during the test may trigger an automatic failure regardless of the measured exhaust values.

Why UAE Vehicles Fail Emission Tests

For petrol vehicles, the most common emission test failure cause is a faulty or aged catalytic converter. The catalyst degrades over time and loses the ability to convert CO and HC into harmless CO2 and water. Failure of the oxygen sensor that provides feedback to the engine management system causes the engine to run with an incorrect fuel mixture, increasing CO and HC output. Spark plug misfires, caused by worn plugs, failing ignition coils, or injector deposits, also elevate HC levels dramatically. For diesel vehicles, a partially blocked diesel particulate filter (DPF) or a stuck-open EGR valve are the most frequent causes of excess smoke opacity.

Cost to Repair Emission Failures in UAE

Oxygen sensor replacement to fix an emission failure on a petrol vehicle costs AED 200 to AED 600 per sensor. Catalytic converter replacement is the most expensive emission repair, costing AED 800 to AED 2,500 for aftermarket units and AED 2,000 to AED 8,000 for OEM units on European luxury vehicles. Spark plug replacement costs AED 150 to AED 800 depending on the number of cylinders and plug type. Fuel injector cleaning costs AED 200 to AED 500. DPF cleaning for diesel vehicles costs AED 600 to AED 1,500. DPF replacement costs AED 3,000 to AED 10,000. An EGR valve clean costs AED 200 to AED 600; replacement costs AED 400 to AED 1,500.

Pre-Inspection Emission Check: Plan Before the Test

The most effective way to ensure a vehicle passes the official UAE emission test is to have it checked by an independent workshop before the Tasjeel or Tamam appointment. A pre-inspection emission check using workshop diagnostic equipment and an OBD code reader identifies any pending fault codes or marginal sensor readings. The workshop can clear faults, replace failing components, and ensure the OBD readiness monitors are complete before the official test. This approach typically saves more in avoided re-inspection fees than the cost of the pre-check itself.
