What Does RON Mean?
RON stands for Research Octane Number. It is the standardised measure of a fuel ability to resist premature combustion, also known as knock or detonation, inside the engine cylinder. Higher RON fuels resist knock at higher compression ratios and under higher boost pressures. Standard petrol engines with relatively low compression ratios (typically 9:1 to 10.5:1) run correctly on RON 95. High-performance engines, turbocharged engines, and engines with direct injection and high compression ratios (typically 11:1 to 13:1) require RON 98 to operate at their rated power output without the engine management system reducing performance through ignition retard.
Which UAE Petrol Grade Does My Car Need?
The required fuel grade is printed on the fuel filler cap, inside the fuel filler flap, or in the vehicle owner manual. Most standard family sedans and SUVs including Toyota Corolla, Nissan Altima, and Hyundai Elantra are specified for RON 95. Sports versions of these models, turbocharged variants, and European and American performance vehicles are typically specified for RON 98. ADNOC Distribution is the largest petrol station network in the UAE, with stations across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and all other emirates. ENOC and EPPCO stations operate primarily in Dubai. UAE Petrol Prices: How They Are Set
The UAE ended petrol subsidies for private vehicles in 2015. Since then, fuel prices are reviewed monthly by the UAE Fuel Price Committee and linked to global crude oil prices. The price for the coming month is announced on the last day of the current month. Prices vary monthly based on global oil market conditions. As of mid-2025, RON 95 and RON 98 prices per litre are published on the official UAE government and ADNOC websites at the start of each month.
Diesel in the UAE
UAE diesel meets Euro 5 and Euro 6 sulfur specifications required for modern diesel vehicles with diesel particulate filters (DPF) and SCR systems. Diesel is sold at all major petrol stations. The price of diesel is set alongside petrol in the monthly price announcement. Misfuelling — filling a diesel vehicle with petrol or a petrol vehicle with diesel — requires immediate professional attention to drain and flush the fuel system before the engine is started, as operating the engine on the wrong fuel causes rapid and expensive damage.
