How Drum Brakes Work
Drum brakes are a type of friction braking system found primarily on the rear axles of budget, compact, and older vehicles. Unlike disc brakes which use caliper-squeezed pads against a flat rotor, drum brakes use curved brake shoes that press outward against the inside surface of a rotating drum attached to the wheel hub. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure from the brake master cylinder is transmitted through brake lines to the wheel cylinder inside the drum assembly. The wheel cylinder expands, pushing the brake shoes outward against the drum surface and creating friction to slow the vehicle.
Drum Brake Components and Their Function
A drum brake assembly consists of the brake drum (the rotating steel shell attached to the wheel hub), the brake shoes (curved friction components covered in brake lining material), the wheel cylinder (the hydraulic actuator that expands to push the shoes), the adjuster mechanism (a threaded rod that automatically or manually compensates for shoe wear to maintain clearance), return springs (that pull the shoes back away from the drum when the brake is released), and the brake backing plate (the fixed mounting plate that everything attaches to). All these components work together to provide consistent braking from the drum brake axle.
Drum Brakes in UAE Vehicles
Many vehicles on UAE roads use a mixed braking system: disc brakes at the front (which handle the majority of braking force, as weight transfers forward during deceleration) and drum brakes at the rear. This combination is common on Japanese and Korean vehicles in the compact and mid-size sedan segment, including many Toyota Corolla, Honda City, Nissan Sunny, and Hyundai Accent variants. Full-size trucks, buses, and some commercial vehicles use drum brakes on all axles due to their higher heat capacity and suitability for sustained heavy-load braking.
When Should Drum Brakes Be Serviced in UAE?
Drum brake components should be inspected every 40,000 km or annually, whichever comes first. Full brake shoe replacement is typically needed every 80,000 to 120,000 km depending on driving style and vehicle use. Wheel cylinder inspection should check for internal or external fluid leaks. The drum surface should be measured for wear beyond the maximum diameter specification. UAE motorists who use their handbrake frequently on inclined parking areas, who tow trailers, or who drive frequently on mountain roads in Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah should schedule inspections more frequently as these uses increase drum brake wear rates.
