It partially surrounds the braking mechanism, preventing large debris and water spray from directly impacting the brake disc and pad or drum and shoe surfaces. The shield also helps channel cooling airflow across the brake disc to prevent excessive temperature buildup during repeated braking. On disc brake vehicles, the dust shield is typically visible as a flat or slightly curved metal plate behind the disc rotor when the wheel is removed or viewed from the underside of the vehicle.
