The idle control valve (also called the idle air control valve or IAC valve) is a small motorised valve that controls the amount of air entering the engine when the throttle is completely closed. At idle, the engine needs a precise air supply to maintain a stable speed, typically around 700 to 850 RPM for most modern petrol cars. The IAC valve opens and closes under ECU control to maintain this target idle speed regardless of engine load from accessories like the air conditioner.
In UAE conditions, the IAC valve accumulates carbon deposits from crankcase blow-by gases and oil vapour that pass through the intake system. UAE heat accelerates the baking of these deposits onto the valve and its bore, reducing valve movement and causing rough or unstable idle.
