UAE Motorway Driving Guide: Speed Limits, Fines and Safe Highway Driving Tips

UAE motorway driving operates at speeds significantly higher than most countries. The E11 Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai and the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway carry traffic at up to 140 kilometres per hour. Understanding UAE speed limits, fine structures, and safe practices for high-speed motorway driving reduces risk and avoids significant financial penalties.

UAE Speed Limits and Black Points 2026

The standard UAE motorway speed limit is 120 kilometres per hour on most Abu Dhabi roads and 100 kilometres per hour on most Dubai roads. Some Abu Dhabi motorways allow 140 kilometres per hour. A 20 kilometres per hour speed tolerance is applied in most emirates before fines are issued. Exceeding the speed limit by 1-20 kmh incurs a fine of AED 300 and 6 black points. Exceeding by 21-30 kmh incurs AED 600 and 12 black points. Exceeding by 31-40 kmh incurs AED 700 and 12 black points. Exceeding by 41-50 kmh incurs AED 900 and 12 black points. Exceeding by more than 60 kmh above the limit incurs AED 3,000, 23 black points, and vehicle confiscation for 60 days. Tailgating on UAE motorways is a serious fine and causes a significant number of UAE motorway accidents.

UAE Motorway Safety Tips

The right lane on UAE motorways is for slower vehicles. Do not use the right lane on a multi-lane motorway as a travel lane while higher-speed traffic is present. Maintain adequate following distance at motorway speeds — at 120 kilometres per hour, a minimum of 100 metres provides safe stopping distance in good conditions. UAE road surfaces heat significantly and trucks shed tyres and debris on motorways. Maintain awareness of road surface and objects in the travel lane. Tyre blowouts at motorway speed are a frequent cause of serious accidents in UAE. Maintain correct tyre pressure and replace tyres before they reach minimum tread depth to reduce blowout risk.
