How to Maintain Your Car Engine in UAE Heat
The UAE summer is one of the harshest automotive environments in the world. Ambient temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, combined with intense sun radiation and stop-start city driving, place extraordinary demands on engine components. Following a UAE-specific engine maintenance routine extends engine life significantly and reduces the risk of costly breakdowns.
Coolant and Cooling System
The cooling system is the most critical system to maintain in UAE conditions. Check coolant level at every fuel stop during summer. Replace the coolant completely every 2 years or 40,000 km. Inspect all radiator and heater hoses for cracking and swelling at every service, replacing them proactively before they fail. A faulty thermostat or low coolant level leads to overheating within minutes in UAE summer traffic.
Engine Oil
High temperatures thin engine oil faster and increase oxidation rates. Use the oil viscosity grade specified by the manufacturer and shorten the oil change interval from 10,000 km to 7,500 km during summer months if the vehicle is driven primarily in city traffic. Full synthetic oil provides the best high-temperature protection. Check the oil level monthly and top up immediately if it falls below the minimum mark.
Air Filter
UAE roads generate significant dust and sand, particularly in areas near construction or desert roads. A clogged air filter restricts airflow and forces the engine to work harder. Inspect the air filter every 10,000 km and replace it every 15,000 to 20,000 km or sooner if visibly contaminated. A performance panel filter with cleaning capability is a cost-effective upgrade for frequent highway drivers.
Fuel System
Replace the fuel filter at the manufacturer-specified interval and use quality fuel from licensed petrol stations. Fuel system cleaning every 40,000 to 60,000 km removes deposits from the fuel rail, injectors and intake valves, restoring fuel economy and throttle response. A compression test every 60,000 to 80,000 km on higher-mileage vehicles provides a clear picture of internal engine health.
Drive Belt and Timing System
The alternator belt, power steering belt and air conditioning belt must be inspected at every service for cracking, glazing and tension. Replace all drive belts at 60,000 to 80,000 km regardless of appearance. Timing belts should be replaced strictly at the manufacturer interval, as a belt failure in UAE heat is likely to occur without warning and can cause catastrophic engine damage.
