Car Headlights in UAE — Laws, Types, and Common Problems
Headlights are safety-critical components that affect both the driver forward visibility and the safety of other road users. UAE RTA regulations govern headlight requirements including type, aim, and condition. Understanding the basics helps UAE drivers maintain compliance and fix headlight problems before they become an RTA inspection failure or a cause of accidents on UAE night roads.
UAE RTA Headlight Requirements
All vehicles registered in the UAE must have both headlights functioning and aimed within UAE RTA specifications. Headlights must be clean and have intact lenses. Cracked or yellowed (oxidised) headlight lenses that significantly reduce light output are a potential RTA fail item. Vehicles must use headlights on all UAE roads from sunset to sunrise, in rain, fog, and in tunnels (of which there are several in Abu Dhabi and Dubai). Using high beam in urban areas when oncoming traffic is present is an RTA traffic offence.
Headlight Types on UAE Vehicles
Most vehicles in the UAE use one of four main headlight technologies. Halogen headlights are the oldest and most common on older and budget vehicles. They are inexpensive to replace (AED 50 to AED 200 per bulb) but produce lower light output and have shorter lifespans than modern alternatives. Xenon (HID) headlights produce more light than halogen and are standard on many mid-range vehicles from 2010 to 2020. Bulbs cost AED 150 to AED 400 per unit but require high-voltage ignitors that also wear out. LED headlights are now standard on most new vehicles and have very long service lives with high light output. LED units are usually replaced as a complete assembly (AED 800 to AED 3,000 per side). Laser headlights appear on premium vehicles (BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz) and are serviced by authorised dealers only.
Common Headlight Problems in UAE
Headlight oxidation (yellowing of polycarbonate lenses) is extremely common in UAE due to high UV exposure. Oxidised lenses reduce light output by up to 80% and are an RTA fail item. Headlight restoration polishing restores clarity for AED 100 to AED 250 per vehicle. Misalignment is common after front-end impacts, speed bumps, or rough road use. Headlight adjustment costs AED 50 to AED 200. Water ingress inside headlight units from cracked seals causes condensation and corrosion of internal reflectors. Complete unit replacement is typically required at AED 500 to AED 3,000 per side depending on headlight type. Bulb failure is the most frequent problem on halogen and xenon vehicles and is resolved by bulb replacement.
