Why Engine Overheating Is a Major Risk in UAE
Engine overheating is one of the most common causes of serious engine damage in the UAE, and it becomes significantly more likely during summer when ambient temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees Celsius. The engine cooling system must reject an enormous amount of heat under these conditions, and any degradation in cooling capacity can push the engine temperature above safe operating limits within a short period of driving. Unlike a flat tyre, which is immediately obvious, a cooling system problem can develop gradually and be easy to miss until the temperature warning light appears. This guide explains what causes overheating in UAE conditions, the warning signs to watch for, and the preventative steps that significantly reduce the risk.
How the Engine Cooling System Works
The engine cooling system circulates coolant (a mixture of water and antifreeze) through passages in the engine block and cylinder head, absorbing heat from the combustion process. The hot coolant flows to the radiator, where it passes through thin tubes surrounded by cooling fins. Air flowing through the radiator removes the heat, and the now-cooler coolant circulates back to the engine. The water pump drives the circulation. The thermostat controls coolant flow, keeping the engine at the correct operating temperature by restricting flow until the engine is warm, then opening fully once the target temperature is reached. The radiator fan pulls additional air through the radiator when the vehicle is stationary or moving slowly. Any failure in this chain of components can cause overheating.
Common Causes of Engine Overheating in UAE
Old or Degraded Coolant
Coolant does not last indefinitely. The corrosion inhibitors and heat transfer additives in the coolant degrade over time, reducing the coolant efficiency and allowing internal corrosion of the radiator, water pump, and coolant passages. Most manufacturers recommend replacing coolant every 2 to 5 years or every 60,000 to 100,000 kilometres. In UAE conditions, where the system is under near-constant thermal stress, replacing coolant at or before the recommended interval is particularly important. Old coolant also tends to acidify, which attacks metal surfaces and rubber hoses.
Low Coolant Level
A cooling system that is low on coolant has less thermal mass to absorb heat and less fluid to circulate through the system. Low coolant is usually caused by a slow leak from a hose connection, the water pump seal, the radiator, or the heater core. A head gasket leak can also cause coolant loss without an external leak visible on the ground. Checking the coolant level at the expansion tank every time the bonnet is opened for an oil check takes under ten seconds and can catch a developing leak early.
Failed or Weak Thermostat
A thermostat that is stuck closed prevents coolant from flowing to the radiator regardless of engine temperature, causing rapid overheating. A thermostat that is stuck open causes the engine to run too cool, reducing efficiency but not causing overheating. Thermostat failure is more likely on older vehicles or those with many years of UAE heat exposure.
Blocked or Damaged Radiator
The radiator can become blocked internally with scale and corrosion deposits from old or contaminated coolant, or externally with dust, sand, or insects, which are all common in UAE conditions. A blocked radiator cannot transfer heat efficiently and the coolant temperature climbs. Radiator fins damaged by road debris can also reduce airflow capacity. Annual cleaning of the external radiator surface and regular coolant flushes prevent scale build-up internally.
Failed Water Pump
The water pump impeller can corrode (particularly in plain water or poorly maintained coolant) or the pump seal can fail, reducing circulation or causing coolant loss. A worn water pump bearing produces a grinding noise from the front of the engine and is a sign that pump replacement is imminent.
Radiator Fan Failure
At low speeds and when stationary, the radiator relies on the electric fan to pull air through the core. A failed fan motor or faulty temperature sensor that does not trigger the fan allows the coolant temperature to rise rapidly when stuck in traffic. The problem is most noticeable in slow-moving city traffic in summer but may not appear during highway driving where ram air flow is sufficient.
Preventative Cooling System Maintenance for UAE Drivers
- Replace coolant at or before the manufacturer-specified interval – annual cooling system inspection is recommended in UAE conditions
- Check the coolant level at the expansion tank monthly and top up with the correct premixed coolant if low
- Inspect radiator hoses for cracks, swelling, or soft spots that indicate imminent failure
- Clean the external radiator surface of dust and debris at regular intervals
- Replace the thermostat and water pump proactively during timing belt service if either is approaching its expected service life
- Test the electric radiator fan operation before summer by running the engine to operating temperature with the air conditioning on and confirming the fan runs
What to Do If Your Car Overheats in UAE
If the temperature warning light or gauge shows the engine is overheating, pull off the road safely and stop the engine immediately. Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before opening the bonnet. Never remove the radiator or expansion tank cap when the engine is hot – pressurised coolant can cause serious burns. Check the coolant level in the expansion tank once cool. If the coolant level is low and you have distilled water available, topping up temporarily can allow you to reach a garage safely.
