Modern cars are packed with electronic safety systems that work in the background to prevent accidents. Most UAE drivers are broadly aware these systems exist, but far fewer understand exactly what they do, how they interact with each other, or what it means when one of them triggers a warning light. This guide provides a clear, practical explanation of the most important active safety systems found in UAE vehicles.

ABS — Anti-Lock Braking System

ABS has been a standard feature on new vehicles in UAE for over two decades. It prevents the wheels from locking up during hard braking, which maintains steering control and reduces stopping distances on most surfaces. When ABS activates, drivers feel a pulsing or juddering through the brake pedal — this is normal and means the system is working. The correct response is to maintain firm, steady brake pressure and do not pump the brakes.

ABS relies on wheel speed sensors at each wheel. If a wheel speed sensor fails or becomes contaminated, the ABS warning light illuminates on the dashboard and the system disengages. The brakes continue to work normally (ABS is an enhancement, not the primary braking system), but you lose the anti-lock function. A wheel speed sensor replacement is typically the fix.

ESP — Electronic Stability Programme

ESP — also called ESC (Electronic Stability Control), DSC, VSC, or similar names depending on the manufacturer — detects and corrects oversteer and understeer by selectively applying braking to individual wheels. It uses data from wheel speed sensors, a yaw rate sensor, a lateral acceleration sensor, and a steering angle sensor to identify when the vehicle’s actual direction differs from the driver’s intended direction, and corrects accordingly.

In the UAE, ESP is particularly valuable on motorways during emergency lane changes and on gravel or sand surfaces common near off-road areas. When ESP activates on a slippery surface, drivers see a flashing ESP warning light. If the ESP light stays on continuously, there is a system fault requiring diagnosis.

Hill Start Assist

Hill start assist (also called hill hold control or hill start control) briefly holds brake pressure after the driver releases the brake pedal when the vehicle detects an incline. This gives the driver time to move their foot from the brake to the accelerator without the vehicle rolling back. In UAE, this is most relevant in multi-storey car parks, steep off-road inclines in the Al Hajar mountains, and steep driveway entrances.

Hill start assist is linked to the ABS and ESP systems and uses the same wheel speed sensors and inclination sensor. A fault in any of these components can disable hill start assist. The system is not available as a standalone component — faults are diagnosed through the ABS/ESP control module.

Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assist

Lane departure warning uses a forward-facing camera to detect lane markings and alerts the driver — via a sound, steering wheel vibration, or dashboard alert — when the vehicle crosses a lane marking without the indicator being active. Lane keeping assist goes further and actively applies a gentle steering correction to bring the vehicle back into the lane.

These systems require the forward camera to be correctly calibrated to the vehicle. Any windscreen replacement, camera removal, or significant change to vehicle geometry requires professional recalibration. Without calibration, the system may give false alerts or fail to detect lane departure at all.

Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking

Forward collision warning uses radar and/or camera sensors to monitor the distance to the vehicle ahead and warns the driver if a collision is imminent. Automatic emergency braking goes further and applies the brakes autonomously if the driver does not respond to the warning in time. These systems can significantly reduce rear-end collision severity and are increasingly common on UAE vehicles.

Radar sensors in the front bumper must remain free from obstruction. Stickers, bull bars, or aftermarket accessories placed in front of radar sensors will impair system function. After any front-end body repair involving the bumper, sensor alignment should be checked by a qualified garage.

What to Do When a Safety System Warning Light Comes On

If a safety system warning light illuminates on your dashboard, do not ignore it. While the vehicle will usually continue to drive normally in terms of basic function, the relevant safety system has been disabled. Have the vehicle scanned for fault codes at a qualified garage. Many safety system faults are straightforward sensor replacements. Left undiagnosed, faults can spread to related systems.

An illuminated warning light will also cause your vehicle to fail the UAE Tasjeel / Wasel periodic inspection. Addressing faults promptly saves money and avoids an inspection failure.
