How UAE Car Insurance Works: Types, Claims, and What’s Covered in 2026

Car insurance is mandatory for all vehicles registered in UAE. Every driver must carry at least third-party liability insurance before their vehicle can be registered or used on public roads. Understanding how UAE car insurance works — what each type covers, how claims are processed, and what can and cannot be claimed — helps you make better decisions when choosing a policy and dealing with incidents on UAE roads.

Types of Car Insurance in UAE

  • Third-Party Liability (TPL): The minimum legal requirement in UAE. Covers damage and injury you cause to other people, their vehicles, and property. Does NOT cover damage to your own vehicle, however caused. The most affordable policy type.
  • Comprehensive Insurance: Covers third-party liability PLUS damage to your own vehicle from accidents, fire, theft, natural disasters, and other covered perils. Recommended for most vehicles, especially newer or financed ones.
  • Comprehensive with Add-ons: Standard comprehensive policies can be enhanced with add-ons such as agency repair (repairs at the car manufacturer’s authorised dealer), roadside assistance, natural calamity cover, and personal accident cover for passengers.

What UAE Car Insurance Covers and Doesn’t Cover

Typically covered (comprehensive policies): Accident damage to your vehicle, third-party injury and property damage, fire damage, vehicle theft, natural disaster damage (floods, sandstorms), and windscreen/glass cover (sometimes as a separate add-on). Typically NOT covered: Mechanical or electrical breakdown (not caused by an accident), tyre punctures or wear, interior wear and tear, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, using the vehicle for commercial purposes when insured as a private vehicle, and damage caused by an unlicensed driver.

How to Make a Car Insurance Claim in UAE

  • In case of an accident, call the police to the scene. A police report is required for most insurance claims in UAE.
  • Obtain the other party’s insurance details, vehicle registration, and Emirates ID if applicable.
  • Contact your insurance company or use their app to report the claim promptly.
  • The insurer will direct you to an approved assessor or body shop for damage assessment.
  • If using agency repair (a policy add-on), your vehicle goes to the brand’s authorised service centre.
  • Pay your excess (deductible) when the vehicle is handed to the repairer.

UAE No-Claims Discount

UAE insurers offer no-claims discounts (NCD) for each claim-free year of insurance. A typical NCD builds up to 20–30% discount over 3–4 years of no claims. Making a claim resets or reduces the NCD. For minor incidents where the repair cost is close to or below your excess, paying out of pocket and preserving the NCD is often the more cost-effective choice over the long term.
