UAE Used Car Buying Guide 2026: What to Check Before You Buy

UAE has one of the most active used car markets in the world, driven by a high turnover of expat residents, frequent vehicle upgrades, and a large supply of low-mileage vehicles. Whether you’re buying from a private seller, a used car dealer, or a platform like Dubizzle or Cars24, knowing what to check before signing over your money can save you from a costly mistake. This guide covers everything you need to know about buying a used car safely in UAE in 2026.

Step 1: Check the Vehicle History

Before physically inspecting any used car, check its accident and service history. In UAE, you can use the RTA’s ITMAM service or CarFax UAE to check a vehicle’s history using the chassis (VIN) number. Look for: number of previous owners, outstanding traffic fines and black points, any recorded accident history, and whether the vehicle registration is current and in the seller’s name.

Step 2: Physical Inspection Checklist

  • Exterior: Check all panels for consistent paint finish. Colour mismatches, orange peel texture differences, or visible filler indicate previous repair work. Check door gaps are even and consistent.
  • Tyres: Check tread depth and whether wear is even. Uneven wear indicates suspension or alignment issues. Check that all four tyres match in brand and size.
  • Under the bonnet: Check for oil or coolant leaks, corroded battery terminals, cracked hoses, and any signs of previous welding or non-standard repairs to the engine bay.
  • Interior: Check all electrics (windows, AC, infotainment, heated seats), door seals, and that all dashboard warning lights go out after startup.
  • Test drive: Drive at different speeds, brake firmly, accelerate hard, and check for any unusual noises, pulling to one side, or vibration.

Step 3: Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection

A professional pre-purchase inspection (PPI) by an independent garage in UAE is strongly recommended for any significant used car purchase. A PPI covers all mechanical systems, body condition, and hidden damage that a visual inspection may miss. Most garages in UAE charge AED 200–500 for a full PPI. This is a small cost compared to the risk of buying a vehicle with undisclosed mechanical issues or accident damage.

Step 4: Ownership Transfer in UAE

Once you’ve agreed to buy, ownership must be transferred through the relevant emirate’s transport authority. In Dubai, this is done at an RTA service centre or through the RTA app. Both buyer and seller must be present (or a legally authorised representative). Required documents include the Mulkiya (registration card), Emirates IDs for both parties, a valid insurance certificate in the new owner’s name, and payment of the transfer fee (typically AED 350–400). The process usually takes 30–60 minutes.
