UAE Car Maintenance in Summer: How to Keep Your Vehicle Running Through the Heat

The UAE summer — running from May through September — is among the most demanding environments any passenger vehicle will face. Ambient temperatures above 45°C combine with high humidity on the coast, intense UV radiation, and roads that radiate additional heat from their surface. For UAE drivers, summer is not just uncomfortable — it is the season when inadequate vehicle maintenance leads to the most breakdowns, the most roadside emergencies, and the most expensive repair bills. This guide covers the essential maintenance checks that every UAE driver should complete before and during summer to keep their vehicle reliable through the hottest months.

1. Cooling System: Your First Priority

The cooling system is under its greatest stress during UAE summer. Coolant levels should be checked monthly between June and September. Look for the reservoir marked with MIN and MAX lines on the translucent plastic bottle near the radiator. The coolant should be at or above the MIN line when the engine is cold. Low coolant, discoloured coolant (brown or rusty instead of blue, green, or pink), or coolant that smells of combustion gases are all signs that a cooling system service is overdue. Most UAE manufacturers recommend a full coolant flush every 2 years or 40,000 km, but extreme heat conditions shorten this interval for many vehicles.

Beyond coolant level, have a technician inspect the radiator cap (which maintains system pressure), upper and lower radiator hoses (for cracking or bulging), the water pump (for leaks at the seal), and the thermostat function. Any weakness in these components will be exposed in UAE summer heat.

2. Battery Check

Counterintuitively, heat — not cold — is a car battery’s greatest enemy. UAE summer heat accelerates the chemical reactions inside the battery, increasing water loss from the electrolyte and shortening the battery’s service life. A battery that is approaching the end of its lifespan will often fail suddenly on a hot UAE morning after being parked overnight, when the battery is at its highest temperature.

UAE mechanics recommend testing battery health before summer with a load tester rather than a simple voltage check. A battery showing 12.6 volts may still fail under the starting load demand. Batteries in the UAE typically last 2 to 4 years due to the heat, significantly shorter than the 4 to 6 years typical in cooler climates. If your battery is over 3 years old, test it before summer.

3. Air Conditioning System

In the UAE, air conditioning is not a comfort feature — it is a safety system. A malfunctioning AC in summer heat can cause heat exhaustion within minutes, particularly dangerous for children in the rear seats. Before summer, have your AC system checked for refrigerant level, compressor belt condition, cabin air filter cleanliness, and condenser coil blockage from dust. Reduced cooling performance, unusual noises when the AC compressor engages, or a musty smell from the vents are all signs that servicing is needed. AC recharge (adding refrigerant) costs AED 150 to 350 at most UAE garages and can dramatically restore cooling performance.

4. Tyre Condition and Pressure

Tyres heat up significantly from road friction and ambient temperature, and hot tarmac in the UAE can reach 70°C in summer. Overinflated, underinflated, or worn tyres are at serious risk of blowout under these conditions. Check tyre pressure when the tyres are cold (before driving more than 2 km), using the pressure specified on the door jamb sticker — not the maximum pressure shown on the tyre sidewall. The recommended pressure is typically 30 to 35 PSI for most sedans and SUVs.

Inspect each tyre for tread depth (UAE law requires a minimum of 1.6mm, but 3mm is the practical safe minimum), sidewall cracks, or bulges. A tyre that shows a bulge in the sidewall should be replaced immediately — the structural integrity of the carcass has been compromised and blowout risk is high.

5. Engine Oil and Other Fluid Levels

Engine oil viscosity degrades faster in extreme heat, so UAE drivers should check the oil level monthly during summer using the dipstick (check when the engine is warm but not immediately after driving). Oil that appears very dark or gritty should be changed regardless of the mileage interval. Use the oil viscosity grade recommended by your vehicle manufacturer for hot climates — typically 5W-40 or 10W-40 for UAE conditions — and choose a full synthetic oil for better high-temperature stability.

Also check brake fluid (in the reservoir near the bulkhead), power steering fluid (if your vehicle has hydraulic steering), and windscreen washer fluid (use a concentrated solution diluted appropriately, not plain water which leaves mineral deposits on the screen in UAE heat).

6. Sunroof Seals, Weather Strips, and Interior Protection

UAE heat accelerates rubber deterioration across your vehicle. Door weather strips that are cracking allow wind noise and dust to enter. Sunroof seals that have hardened stop water from summer car washes and winter rains from being directed into the drainage channels and allow it to enter the headliner instead. A quick inspection of all rubber seals during a summer service visit can prevent expensive interior water damage.
