Car Lighting Laws in UAE: What Every Driver Must Know

Vehicle lighting in the UAE is regulated under Federal Traffic Law No. 21 of 1995 and subsequent ministerial decisions. Every UAE driver is responsible for ensuring all their vehicle’s lights are in working order. A defective light is not just a traffic violation — it is a genuine road safety risk on UAE’s fast highways and poorly lit rural roads. This guide covers what UAE law requires, what commonly fails, and how to stay compliant.

Which Lights Are Legally Required in UAE?

UAE traffic law requires all of the following lights to be fully functional at all times: headlights (low beam and high beam), tail lights, brake lights (stop lights), reverse lights, number plate lights, front and rear fog lights, and turn signal indicators (front and rear, left and right). Hazard lights must also work. Any defect in these lights is grounds for a traffic fine and can be flagged in an RTA vehicle inspection.

Common Vehicle Light Failures in UAE

Headlight Failure

Halogen headlight bulbs have a limited lifespan and will eventually burn out. They also degrade gradually over time, producing significantly less light than a new bulb even when technically functioning. UAE’s high temperatures accelerate filament degradation. Many UAE mechanics recommend replacing headlight bulbs in pairs so both sides produce equal brightness. LED and xenon HID headlights generally last far longer but are more expensive to replace when they do fail.

Indicator Light Failure

Indicator (turn signal) bulbs burn out more frequently than other lights because they cycle on and off during use, which is harder on filaments. A burnt-out indicator typically causes hyperflashing (the remaining indicator on that side flashes twice as fast). Replace the burnt bulb immediately to avoid a traffic violation.

Brake Light Failure

Brake light failure is one of the most dangerous defects because following drivers cannot see that you are slowing down. It is also one of the most common causes of rear-end collisions. Brake lights are often harder to notice from inside the car, so ask a friend to check them or look for reflections when reversing near a wall.

Number Plate Light Failure

The number plate light illuminates the rear number plate at night. Without it, your number plate is unreadable to police and cameras at night, which is a traffic offence. Number plate lights are small, inexpensive bulbs that are often overlooked but can trigger fines during night patrols.

RTA Vehicle Inspection and Lighting

During an annual RTA vehicle inspection (Muroor inspection) in UAE, all vehicle lights are tested systematically. A single defective light will cause the vehicle to fail the inspection until the fault is repaired and verified. Given the short time frame UAE drivers are given to rectify inspection failures, it is strongly advisable to check all lights before booking an inspection. Most UAE garages offer a pre-inspection check that covers all lighting as part of a general vehicle health check.

Headlight Aim and Brightness Standards

Beyond bulb function, UAE traffic law also addresses headlight aim. Incorrectly aimed headlights can dazzle oncoming drivers and are particularly dangerous on UAE’s unlit desert highways. Headlight aim is checked during the RTA inspection using a beam pattern tester. If you have changed your headlight bulbs, replaced the headlight assembly, or had bodywork done that required removing the headlights, have the aim checked and adjusted by a UAE garage before driving at night.
