Car Insurance in UAE: What Every Driver Needs to Know

Car insurance is mandatory for all vehicles registered in the UAE. The UAE Insurance Authority regulates motor insurance and sets minimum coverage requirements. With hundreds of insurance products on offer from UAE and GCC-based insurers, choosing the right policy requires understanding the key types of cover, what they include, and what common exclusions UAE motorists should be aware of. This guide covers car insurance in UAE in 2026.

Types of Car Insurance Available in UAE

  • Third Party Liability (TPL): The minimum legal requirement. Covers damage or injury you cause to other people, other vehicles, and property. Does NOT cover damage to your own vehicle. TPL is the cheapest option and is typically used for older vehicles with a market value below AED 20,000–30,000.
  • Comprehensive Insurance: Covers third party liability PLUS damage to your own vehicle from accidents, theft, fire, natural disasters, and in most UAE policies, damage from sandstorms. Comprehensive is recommended for any vehicle worth over AED 30,000.

Key UAE Car Insurance Add-Ons Worth Considering

  • Agency repair clause: Ensures your vehicle is repaired at an authorised service centre (e.g., official Toyota or BMW workshop) rather than an approved independent garage. Essential for vehicles still under manufacturer warranty.
  • Natural disaster / flood cover: Some UAE policies exclude flood damage unless specifically added. Given the rare but significant flooding events in UAE (March 2024 was the most severe in recorded history), this is worth checking.
  • Off-road cover: Standard comprehensive policies do NOT cover off-road use. If you drive in the desert or wadi areas, you need a specific off-road extension.
  • Roadside assistance: 24-hour breakdown and towing service. Often included in comprehensive policies; sometimes sold as an add-on.
  • Personal accident cover: Pays a lump sum in the event of death or disability of the driver.

How UAE Car Insurance Premiums Are Calculated

UAE car insurance premiums are based on: the vehicle’s market value (for comprehensive policies), the vehicle’s make and model (repair costs, theft risk), the driver’s age and years of experience, the driver’s claims history and no-claims discount (NCD), the driver’s UAE driving licence category, and the number of drivers on the policy. No-claims bonuses accumulate over years without a claim and can reduce premiums significantly.

Common UAE Car Insurance Exclusions

UAE car insurance policies commonly exclude: accidents caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, using the vehicle for commercial purposes beyond the declared use, damage caused while driving without a valid UAE licence, wear and tear and mechanical breakdown (insurance is not a maintenance product), and damage caused by unauthorised modifications (including illegal tinting or illegal exhaust systems).
