Car AC Keeps Losing Refrigerant? Here’s Why
If your car AC needs regassing every few months rather than every two to three years, something is wrong. Refrigerant doesn’t simply evaporate under normal conditions — it circulates in a sealed loop. Repeated refrigerant loss means you have a leak somewhere in the system. Here are the most common reasons this happens in the UAE.
1. Failed O-Rings and Seals
The most common cause of slow AC refrigerant leaks in the UAE. The rubber O-rings and seals at every connection point in the AC system degrade over time, particularly under the extreme heat cycles common in the UAE — from a cool garage overnight to scorching direct sunlight during the day. Small cracks allow refrigerant to escape slowly over weeks or months.
2. Damaged or Corroded AC Pipes and Hoses
The aluminium and rubber pipes that carry refrigerant around the system can develop corrosion pinholes or cracks from heat and vibration. This is more common on older vehicles (7+ years) and on cars regularly parked outdoors. A slow pinhole leak may not be immediately obvious but will cause the AC to underperform progressively.
3. AC Condenser Damage
The condenser sits at the front of the car, behind the grille, and is vulnerable to stone chips and debris impact. Even tiny stone strikes can cause slow leaks that worsen over time. In the UAE, where road debris from construction is common, condenser damage is a frequent cause of refrigerant loss.
4. Leaking Schrader Valve
The Schrader valves (service ports) on the AC system are similar to tyre valves and can develop leaks if the valve core is loose, worn, or if the cap is missing. This is often an easy fix — a new valve core or cap costs very little and takes minutes to replace.
5. AC Evaporator Leak
The evaporator sits inside the dashboard and is difficult to inspect or access without significant disassembly. Leaks here are less common but harder to find and more expensive to fix. A chemical dye test under UV light is the most reliable way to detect an evaporator leak.
6. Compressor Shaft Seal Leak
The rotating shaft of the compressor is sealed with a dynamic seal. Over time, this seal can harden and crack, allowing refrigerant to leak around the shaft. This is more common in high-mileage vehicles and in those where the compressor runs almost constantly — which includes virtually every vehicle in the UAE.
What to Do If Your AC Keeps Losing Gas
Do not keep regassing without fixing the underlying leak. Running the compressor with low refrigerant overheats it and causes premature wear, potentially turning a small, inexpensive leak repair into a AED 2,000 to AED 5,000 compressor replacement.
