The combination of intense UV radiation, fine desert dust, occasional sandstorms, and car parks where door dings are basically guaranteed means that without some protective maintenance, a car’s paint and interior degrade faster here than almost anywhere else. What Each Level of Detailing Actually Includes
The terminology is not standardised and varies between shops, which is a source of genuine confusion. Here is what to expect behind the common labels.
A basic wash and vacuum (sometimes called a “mini detail”) is exactly what it sounds like: exterior hand wash, interior vacuum, windows cleaned. Cost: AED 30 to 80. Fine for maintenance cleaning but does nothing for paint condition.
A full detail or “standard detail” typically includes exterior hand wash, clay bar treatment (removes bonded contamination from paint surface), machine polish to remove light swirl marks and scratches, wax or paint sealant, interior deep clean including seats and carpets, and window cleaning inside and out. Cost in Dubai: AED 300 to 700 for a standard sedan, AED 500 to 1,000 for a large SUV like a Land Cruiser or Prado. This is the service most drivers should be doing once or twice a year.
Paint correction is a more intensive single-stage or multi-stage machine polishing process that removes deeper swirl marks, scratches, and oxidation. Often done before a ceramic coating. Cost: AED 600 to 2,000 depending on paint condition and the number of correction stages. A heavily oxidised car or one with deep swirl marks takes more time and cost.
Ceramic coating is the current premium option. A proper coating is a semi-permanent protective layer (two to five years depending on quality) that significantly reduces water spotting, UV fade, dust adhesion, and the effort required to keep the car clean. It does not make the car scratch-proof. Cost for a proper application including paint decontamination and correction: AED 1,500 to 5,000 depending on the product tier and shop. Be wary of “ceramic coating” offered for AED 400; at that price it is a spray sealant with ceramic additives, not a proper coating application.
UAE-Specific Issues Worth Addressing
Water spots are a particular problem in the UAE because of the mineral-heavy tap water used for washing and the hard water in some areas. Water spots that are allowed to etch into clear coat are expensive to remove. Getting paint protection applied before this happens is cheaper than correcting it afterwards.
UV fade is real and visible in the UAE over 3 to 5 years without protection; lighter coloured cars and those with thinner factory clear coats are particularly vulnerable. A quality wax or paint sealant every three months is the minimum; a ceramic coating for long-term ease of maintenance.
How to Find a Good Detailer
Look specifically for reviews that include before and after photos; they tell you more than any written review. Avoid choosing based purely on price; ceramic coating in particular is a skilled application job where the prepwork (paint decontamination and correction) makes or breaks the result.
