“I just had it serviced” does not mean much if the workshop only changed the oil and nothing else. In the UAE, where high heat, heavy dust, and stop-start city traffic all take a harder toll on vehicles than the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule accounts for, a proper service inspection covers significantly more than an oil and filter change. This is what should actually happen at each interval.
Every Service (Minimum Every 5,000 km in UAE Conditions)
Engine oil and filter change. This is table stakes. In UAE heat, standard 7,500 to 10,000 km mineral oil intervals should be compressed to 5,000 km. Fully synthetic oil can run to 7,500 to 8,000 km.
Tyre pressure check (all four tyres plus spare). Tyre pressure changes with temperature; a car sitting in summer heat will show higher pressure at rest than when cold. Check pressures in the morning before the car has been driven. UAE drivers consistently run under-inflated tyres because street-level checks happen after driving.
Visual inspection of tyre condition: tread depth, sidewall cracks, uneven wear patterns that indicate alignment or suspension problems.
Fluid top-ups: coolant reservoir, brake fluid, power steering fluid, windscreen washer fluid. In UAE heat the coolant reservoir level drops faster due to evaporation; a low level can indicate a more serious leak.
Every 10,000 km
Air filter inspection. In UAE dust conditions, this often needs replacement at 10,000 km rather than the 20,000 to 30,000 km intervals in your manual. After sandstorms: check immediately regardless of mileage.
Cabin filter replacement. Most UAE drivers replace this far too infrequently. A clogged cabin filter reduces AC effectiveness noticeably and recirculates dust. AED 40 to 80 every 10,000 km or annually, whichever comes first.
Battery health test. Any workshop with a digital load tester can do this in five minutes. Essential for batteries over 18 months old in UAE conditions. Ask for the result as a percentage of original capacity; below 60% is replacement territory.
Tyre rotation. Moving tyres from front to rear and vice versa ensures even wear across all four. Front tyres on front-wheel-drive cars wear significantly faster than rears.
Brake inspection: pad thickness measurement and rotor surface condition. In UAE stop-start traffic, brakes wear faster than the interval your manual suggests.
Every 20,000 km or Annually
Coolant system inspection and pH test. The coolant degrades over time and loses its corrosion-inhibiting properties; UAE heat accelerates this. A coolant flush every two years is appropriate for most UAE vehicles.
Drive belt inspection. The serpentine belt that drives your alternator, power steering pump, and AC compressor degrades faster in UAE heat than manufacturer intervals suggest. Inspect it: cracks across the ribs, fraying edges, or glazing means replace before it fails and leaves you stranded.
Spark plugs: most modern engines run iridium or platinum plugs that genuinely last 50,000 to 80,000 km; older engines or those with copper plugs need changes every 20,000 to 30,000 km.
Wheel alignment. Check annually regardless of symptoms; UAE road conditions (speed bumps, rough surfaces, kerb impacts) throw alignment off gradually.
Every 40,000 km
Transmission fluid: many manufacturers say “lifetime” fluid, but in UAE heat conditions, 40,000 to 60,000 km is a more realistic interval for automatics. The fluid darkens and loses viscosity; changing it is cheap compared to a transmission repair.
Brake fluid: absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. Important in UAE heat where brake temperatures are higher. Replace every two years regardless of mileage.
