Car Insurance UAE 2026: Types, Costs & What to Compare

3 Jul 2026 3 min read

Car insurance is mandatory in UAE — you cannot register or drive a vehicle without it. But with dozens of insurers competing for UAE business, the difference between the cheapest and most comprehensive policy can be thousands of dirhams. This guide explains the types available, what to compare, and what UAE car insurance actually costs in 2026.

Types of Car Insurance in UAE

Third-Party Only (TPO): The legal minimum in UAE. Covers damage you cause to other vehicles, property, and persons. Does NOT cover damage to your own car from any cause. TPO is suitable only for older, low-value cars where repair costs exceed the insurance premium. Cost: AED 600-1,500/year.

Comprehensive: Covers third-party liability AND damage to your own car from accidents, fire, theft, and natural events. Most UAE residents should have comprehensive cover. Cost: AED 1,500-8,000+/year depending on car value, driver age, and claims history.

Car Value (AED)Comprehensive (AED/year)Third-Party (AED/year)
Under AED 50,000AED 1,500–2,500AED 600–1,000
AED 50,000–150,000AED 2,500–5,000AED 800–1,500
AED 150,000–300,000AED 4,000–8,000AED 1,000–1,800
Over AED 300,000AED 6,000–15,000+AED 1,200–2,500

Premiums are typically 1.5%–2.5% of car market value annually for comprehensive cover. Young drivers (under 25) and new UAE licence holders pay significantly higher premiums.

Key Policy Features to Compare

  • Agency repair vs non-agency: Agency repair means your car is repaired at the authorized dealer (e.g., Al-Futtaim for Toyota) using OEM parts. Non-agency means the insurer can send your car to any approved workshop. Agency repair adds AED 300-800/year but maintains warranty compliance and parts quality.
  • Excess (deductible): The amount you pay on each claim before insurance kicks in. Lower excess = higher premium. Standard UAE excesses: AED 500-2,500 depending on the policy.
  • Personal accident cover: Pays a lump sum if you or your passengers suffer serious injury or death. Usually AED 50,000-200,000. Check if it’s included or a paid add-on.
  • Roadside assistance: Towing, battery jump-start, tyre change. Check if UAE-wide or Dubai only.
  • GCC cover: If you drive to Oman, Saudi Arabia, or other GCC states, verify your policy includes GCC territorial extension. Not all UAE policies do.
  • No Claims Discount (NCD): UAE insurers offer up to 20-25% discount for claim-free years. Ask about NCD transferability if switching insurer.

How to Save on UAE Car Insurance

  • Compare quotes via UAE aggregators (yallacompare, policybazaar.ae, souqalmal.com) — premiums vary 30-50% for the same cover
  • Install a dashcam — some insurers offer 5-10% discount with dashcam footage commitment
  • Choose higher excess to lower premium if you have a clean driving record
  • Avoid small claims — protect your NCD unless damage cost significantly exceeds your next year’s premium saving
  • Bundle home + car insurance with the same insurer for multi-product discounts
