How to Tell If Your Car Boot Latch, Gear Lever or Power Seat Needs Repair
Three of the most overlooked interior components on UAE-registered vehicles are the boot latch, gear lever, and power seats. Because they do not directly affect engine performance, drivers often postpone repairs. But a faulty boot latch is a safety issue, a worn gear lever affects drive quality, and a stuck power seat can make safe driving impossible. Here is how to spot problems early.
Boot Latch Warning Signs
The clearest sign of a failing boot latch is the boot failing to latch shut when you close it. You may also notice the boot lid bouncing slightly when driving on rough UAE roads, or the boot release button producing a click but the lid not opening. In vehicles with keyless boot entry, the proximity trigger may fail to activate the release mechanism. Wired electric boot releases may also fail if the cable or actuator motor is damaged.
Gear Lever Warning Signs
For manual transmission vehicles, a gear lever that has excessive wobble, is difficult to slot into a particular gear, or requires extra force to move between gears is overdue for inspection. A clunking or crunching noise when selecting gears that is separate from transmission noise can also indicate gear lever linkage wear. For automatic vehicles, a gear selector that does not respond smoothly, requires multiple attempts to move from Park, or displays a gear on the dashboard different from the one selected is a clear signal to visit a workshop.
Power Seat Warning Signs
The most obvious sign is the seat refusing to move when the adjustment button is pressed. More subtle signs include the seat moving in some directions but not others, the seat moving very slowly, and clicking or grinding sounds from beneath the seat cushion when an adjustment is attempted. A seat that gradually drifts from your preferred position when not in use may indicate a fault with the seat position sensor or control module.
