Battery terminal corrosion is one of the most common causes of starting problems and electrical faults in UAE vehicles — and one of the simplest to diagnose and fix. In UAE summer heat, battery acid evaporates more rapidly than in cooler climates, depositing corrosive sulphate crystals on the battery terminals. These crystals increase electrical resistance at the connection point, reducing the current that reaches the starter motor and alternator.
Why UAE Heat Accelerates Battery Terminal Corrosion
Lead-acid car batteries contain sulphuric acid. As the battery charges and discharges and generates heat, acid vapour escapes through the battery vents. In UAE summer conditions (ambient temperatures 40 to 47 degrees Celsius, engine bay temperatures potentially exceeding 80 to 100 degrees), this acid vapour output is significantly higher than in cooler climates. The vapour deposits white or blue-green sulphate crystals on the terminal posts and cable clamps. These crystals are both corrosive and electrically resistive.
How Terminal Corrosion Affects Vehicle Performance
Even small amounts of corrosion increase electrical resistance at the battery connection. This resistance reduces the current available for starting and charging. Symptoms include: slow or weak cranking (the engine turns over sluggishly), a clicking sound from the starter (insufficient current to engage the starter fully), intermittent starting failures, fluctuating dashboard lights, electrical faults triggered by vibration, and in severe cases, the vehicle failing to start entirely despite a fully charged battery.
Cleaning Battery Terminals Yourself
Terminal corrosion can often be cleaned at home using a solution of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) and water — the alkali neutralises the acid crystals. Apply the solution with an old toothbrush, let it fizz, then rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly before reconnecting. Apply petroleum jelly or dedicated battery terminal grease after cleaning to slow future corrosion. Disconnect the negative terminal first when removing the battery cables.
When to Replace Terminals and Cables
Cleaning is sufficient when the corrosion is on the surface of the terminal and the cable is still in good condition. Terminal or cable replacement is required when: the terminal clamp is cracked, corroded through, or cannot be tightened securely, when the corrosion has migrated inside the cable insulation (the copper strands inside the cable are corroded and green rather than bright), or when the cable has been damaged and repaired multiple times.
