Car Body Sealing Maintenance Guide for UAE Drivers
In the UAE, the combination of extreme heat, UV radiation, sand, salt air and torrential but infrequent rainfall creates a uniquely harsh environment for vehicle body seals and exterior components. Maintaining the sealing systems on your vehicle reduces noise, prevents water damage to the cabin and interior, and extends the life of metal body panels by preventing moisture ingress. Door and Window Weatherstrips
Weatherstrips are the first line of defence against wind noise, sand and rain. Inspect all door seals, window belts and boot seals every 12 months. Signs of deterioration include cracking, compression set (the seal no longer springs back after being compressed), hardness and visible peeling from the door frame. Apply a silicone-based rubber conditioner every 3 to 4 months to maintain pliability and UV resistance.
Sunroof Seals and Drainage Channels
Sunroof seals are particularly vulnerable in the UAE because parked vehicles reach extremely high temperatures that dry out the seal contact surface. Clean the sunroof drainage channels at every service using compressed air or a thin flexible brush. Blocked drainage channels cause water to overflow into the headliner during the UAE winter rain season, leading to mould and electrical faults.
Windscreen and Rear Window Seals
OEM-fitted windscreens use a polyurethane bonding adhesive that provides an excellent long-term seal. Aftermarket windscreen replacements occasionally use lower-grade adhesives that can shrink and create wind noise or water ingress paths. If you notice wind noise from the windscreen area after a screen replacement, have the seal inspected by a reputable garage.
Underbody Sealing
The UAE coast produces salt spray that accelerates undercar corrosion. An annual undercoating inspection and touch-up of any damaged sections protects wheel arches, floor panels and sill sections from rust. Sand-blasting from rough roads also strips underbody coatings over time, particularly on 4WD vehicles driven on graded desert tracks.
Boot and Fuel Cap Seals
The boot weatherstrip must seal completely to prevent the UAE summer heat from baking the boot interior and to stop rain and sand ingress. The fuel cap seal should also be inspected at every service, as a faulty cap seal can trigger an evaporative emissions warning light and cause fuel vapour odour from the rear of the vehicle.
