Drum brakes use a cylindrical drum that rotates with the wheel. Inside the drum, curved brake shoes lined with friction material are pushed outward against the drum interior when the driver presses the brake pedal. The friction between the shoes and the drum slows the wheel. A hydraulic wheel cylinder at the top of the assembly supplies the force to push the shoes outward, and a return spring brings the shoes back when the pedal is released.
Drum brakes are most commonly found on rear axles of budget and mid-range vehicles, where the braking load is lighter. Many UAE family vehicles, including popular models from Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia, use rear drum brakes in their standard configurations. They are reliable, simple, and inexpensive to service.
When to Book a Brake Drum Service
The most common sign that drum brakes need attention is a grinding or scraping noise from the rear when braking. This indicates the friction material on the shoes has worn down to the metal backing. A soft or spongy brake pedal can indicate a failing wheel cylinder leaking brake fluid into the drum. An uneven pull to one side during braking points to uneven shoe wear or a seized adjuster. Excessive brake dust visible on the rear wheels is another early indicator.
In UAE conditions, the self-adjuster mechanism inside drum brakes is prone to seizing due to dust and moisture from infrequent rain. A seized adjuster causes the shoes to drag against the drum, generating excess heat and premature wear. A periodic service including adjuster lubrication and function check prevents this.
Drum Brake Service Intervals in the UAE
Most manufacturers recommend inspecting drum brakes every 20,000 to 40,000 km or once a year. In the UAE, where stop-start city traffic in Dubai and Abu Dhabi puts extra load on rear brakes, the lower end of this range is recommended. Brake shoe replacement typically becomes necessary every 50,000 to 80,000 km depending on driving style, vehicle weight, and load carrying habits.
Drum Brake Service Cost in the UAE
An inspection and adjustment at a UAE garage costs AED 100 to AED 200. Brake shoe replacement for one axle typically costs AED 300 to AED 600 including parts and labour. Drum replacement adds AED 200 to AED 500 per axle. Fitting new shoes and a machined or new drum together at the same service is more economical than doing them separately since the wheel and drum must come off in both cases.
