Car Brake Noise in UAE — Causes and What To Do 2026

Brake noise is one of the most common concerns UAE drivers report at workshops. The UAE’s extreme heat, frequent stop-start traffic, and dusty desert environment all affect brake system behaviour in ways that differ from cooler climates. Not all brake noise is dangerous — but some requires immediate attention. This guide covers the most common causes of brake noise in UAE vehicles and what each means for your safety.

Types of Brake Noise in UAE and What They Mean

1. Squealing When Braking

A high-pitched squeal when applying the brakes is the most common brake noise UAE drivers report. Causes include: worn brake pad wear indicators (a metal tab that deliberately squeals when pads are low — replace immediately); glazed brake pads or rotors from excessive heat (common in UAE’s heavy traffic); bedding dust from new brake pads (goes away after 100-200 km); or low-quality aftermarket pads. Brake pad replacement costs AED 150-600 per axle in UAE.

2. Grinding When Braking

A harsh metal-on-metal grinding sound when braking indicates the brake pad material has worn completely through, and the metal backing plate is now contacting the brake disc. This requires emergency repair — braking ability is severely compromised and rotor damage is occurring. Brake pads + rotor resurfacing or replacement: AED 400-1,200 per axle.

3. Clicking or Knocking When Braking

A click or knock when pressing or releasing the brake pedal often indicates loose caliper hardware (anti-rattle clips or caliper mounting bolts that have corroded loose). In UAE conditions, caliper hardware can corrode from humidity and dust. Hardware replacement or caliper overhaul: AED 100-400.

4. Scraping Noise When Braking (Not Every Stop)

An intermittent scraping that only occurs on some brake applications is often caused by a small stone or debris embedded in the brake pad or caliper. Common in UAE where fine gravel and debris is frequent. Usually resolves itself or requires the wheel to be removed to clear the debris.

5. Squealing Overnight or After Rain (UAE Winter)

UAE vehicles left outside overnight — even in summer — can develop a thin rust layer on the brake discs that causes a squeal on the first few brake applications. This is normal and harmless, and disappears within a few brake applications.

6. Brake Noise Under Light Pressure Only

Some high-performance or semi-metallic brake pads are inherently noisy at light brake pressure. Many UAE drivers fit this type of pad seeking better fade resistance in the UAE heat. Noise disappears when the pad is warmed and under moderate pressure — this is a characteristic of the pad compound, not a defect.
