Why Your Car Brakes Make Noise in the UAE: Causes, Fixes and Costs

24 Jul 2026 2 min read

Brake noise is one of the most common complaints from UAE drivers, particularly after the summer months. That squealing, grinding or pulsating feeling underfoot has several causes — and some are more serious than others. Here’s what UAE drivers need to know.

Common Causes of Brake Noise in the UAE

Surface rust on brake discs: After heavy rain or sitting unused for a few days, a thin layer of rust can form on brake discs. This causes a scraping noise on the first few stops and typically clears within a short drive. This is normal and not a safety concern.

Worn brake pads: Most brake pads have a wear indicator — a small metal tab that contacts the disc when the pad gets thin. The resulting squealing is a deliberate warning that the pads need replacing. Ignore it and the pad wears through, leaving metal on metal and grinding instead of squealing — which means disc damage and a larger repair bill.

Warped or scored brake discs: High-speed braking followed by slow urban driving — common in Dubai’s stop-start traffic — can cause discs to warp over time. This produces a pulsating vibration through the brake pedal and sometimes noise. Disc resurfacing can fix minor warping if the disc is still within minimum thickness.

Heat-glazed pads: Extended heavy braking — particularly on steep roads in RAK or Fujairah mountain routes — can glaze brake pads, reducing friction and causing a high-pitched squeal. Replacing or roughening the pads usually solves this.

When to Get Brakes Checked

Any brake noise that persists beyond the first few stops, any pulsation through the pedal, or any increase in stopping distance warrants a brake inspection. Most garages in the UAE offer a free brake check as part of a general service.
