Car Brake Warning Light Guide for UAE Drivers (2026)

There are several different brake warning lights that can appear on a UAE vehicle dashboard, each indicating a different system and requiring different actions. Understanding which light has illuminated and what it means helps UAE drivers respond correctly rather than guessing in traffic.

Red Brake Warning Light (Exclamation Mark)

A red brake warning light (often an exclamation mark inside a circle with parentheses) has two main causes. The first is that the handbrake (parking brake) is still applied while the vehicle is moving — check and release it immediately. The second, more serious cause, is low brake fluid level, which indicates either evaporation over time or a leak in the brake system. A brake fluid leak is a safety emergency — test the brake pedal firmness carefully and if the pedal feels spongy or low, pull over safely and have the vehicle towed.

Brake Pad Wear Warning Light

Some vehicles have a separate warning light or the word BRAKE appears when the brake pad wear sensor is triggered. This means the brake pads have reached minimum thickness and need replacement. The vehicle is still safe to drive short distances to a garage but prolonged driving will cause metal-to-metal contact and disc damage. In UAE urban driving with frequent stops, this can progress quickly.

ABS Warning Light

The ABS warning light indicates a fault in the Anti-lock Braking System. The standard brakes continue to work normally when ABS is illuminated, but the electronic anti-lock function is disabled. In UAE conditions where emergency braking on loose gravel or sand is occasionally required, ABS functionality matters. Have the system diagnosed at a UAE garage with ABS diagnostic capability.

Electronic Parking Brake Warning Light

Vehicles with electronic parking brakes (EPB) have a specific light for EPB faults. This is separate from the standard brake warning light and requires specialist diagnosis. In UAE heat, the EPB actuator motor can sometimes overheat and enter a fault state on steep hills or during very frequent operation.
