Car Cooling System Maintenance Guide for UAE Drivers
The cooling system is the most critical system for surviving UAE summer driving. When ambient temperatures reach 45 to 50 degrees Celsius and engine bays hit 80 to 100 degrees, even a small cooling system fault can escalate to a complete engine overheating event within minutes. This guide covers the essential cooling system maintenance steps every UAE driver should take to protect their engine through summer.
Coolant Condition and Concentration
Coolant (antifreeze) serves two functions: it lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point of the water in the cooling system, and it contains corrosion inhibitors that protect the radiator, water pump, heater core, and engine block from corrosion. In UAE conditions, the corrosion inhibitors in coolant deplete over 2 to 3 years regardless of mileage, allowing corrosion to form inside the cooling system. A coolant flush every 2 years or 40,000 km is recommended. In UAE heat a 50 percent coolant to water concentration is appropriate.
Radiator Cap Pressure
The radiator cap maintains cooling system pressure that raises the boiling point of the coolant. A failed cap allows the system to lose pressure and the coolant to boil at a lower temperature. Pressure test the radiator cap every 2 to 3 years. Replacement costs AED 30 to AED 150 and is one of the most cost-effective preventive maintenance steps in UAE conditions.
Coolant Hoses and Clamps
UAE heat causes rubber coolant hoses to become hard and brittle over time. Cracks develop in the outer rubber layer and eventually the hose splits under pressure, causing a sudden and catastrophic coolant loss. Inspect all coolant hoses annually by squeezing them (a healthy hose has some flexibility but should not feel rock-hard or show surface cracking). Replace hoses that are hard or cracked. Hose clamps should be inspected for corrosion and tightened if the hose has softened.
Coolant Reservoir
The coolant reservoir is a plastic tank that undergoes thousands of heat cycles over the vehicle life. UAE extreme heat accelerates plastic embrittlement, and hairline cracks develop that cause slow coolant loss. Inspect the reservoir for cracks and coolant stains annually. Replace if cracked. Coolant reservoir replacement costs AED 150 to AED 500.
Water Pump Condition
The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. A failing water pump causes inadequate coolant flow and overheating. Signs include coolant leaking from the pump weep hole, a rumbling noise from the pump bearing, and overheating without other obvious causes. Water pump replacement is often combined with timing belt replacement at major service intervals.
Pre-Summer Cooling System Check
Before UAE summer (April to October), have a complete cooling system check performed at a certified UAE garage. This includes a pressure test of the system and the radiator cap, coolant concentration and condition check, hose and clamp inspection, radiator fin condition check, and water pump inspection. This one-hour check can prevent a roadside breakdown in 45-degree heat.
