CV Axle Problems UAE | What That Clicking Noise Really Means
If you hear a rhythmic clicking or clunking noise when turning your car in a car park or while manoeuvring at low speed, you are almost certainly listening to a failing CV joint on your drive axle. CV axle problems are extremely common in UAE vehicles, and the clicking sound is one of the most diagnostic noises a car can make. Understanding what the noise means, what causes it, and how urgently it needs attention helps UAE drivers make informed decisions before a minor problem becomes a major breakdown.
What Is a CV Axle?
The constant velocity axle connects the gearbox output shaft to the wheel hub. Unlike a simple rigid shaft, the CV axle uses specially designed joints at each end to maintain smooth rotational power transfer regardless of the steering angle and suspension travel. The outer CV joint is the one that experiences the greatest angular movement as the wheel turns during steering. The inner joint connects to the gearbox and primarily handles the extension and compression movement as the suspension travels. Both joints are packed with grease and sealed by rubber boots. When the boots fail, the CV joint fails.
The Clicking Noise Explained
The clicking noise from a failing CV joint is caused by the worn ball bearings inside the joint moving through the grooved races with insufficient lubrication. Because the clicking is most pronounced at full steering lock (maximum angle), it is loudest when parking, making U-turns, or pulling out of a junction. As the joint deteriorates further, the clicking becomes audible at progressively smaller steering angles and eventually at straight-ahead driving too. The clicking sound from a CV joint is distinct from brake noise (which relates to brake pedal application), wheel bearing noise (a constant hum that changes with speed), or suspension noise (random clunks over bumps).
Why CV Joints Fail in UAE
The primary cause of CV joint failure in UAE vehicles is a torn or cracked rubber boot. In the UAE, the extreme summer heat (regularly above 45 degrees Celsius under the bonnet) accelerates rubber degradation, causing boots to crack and split earlier than in cooler climates. Once the boot tears, grease flings out onto the wheel well (easily visible as dark greasy splatter) and road dust and grit enter the joint. Metal-on-metal wear begins immediately. Vehicles that spend time on sand or unpaved roads in desert areas experience even faster joint deterioration once the boot is compromised.
How Urgent Is a Clicking CV Axle?
A mildly clicking CV axle is not immediately dangerous but it is a warning that should be addressed within days or weeks, not months. As the joint wears, the clicking becomes more frequent and pronounced. A severely worn joint can separate completely during driving, causing sudden loss of power to the wheel and a potential loss of vehicle control. In a serious failure, the axle can contact the road surface or inner wheel arch, causing secondary damage. UAE drivers should not delay CV axle replacement once clicking is confirmed by a workshop inspection.
How CV Axle Replacement Is Performed
A technician raises the vehicle, removes the wheel, loosens the central hub nut (which holds the axle in the wheel hub), and disconnects the inner end of the axle from the gearbox. The entire axle shaft is removed as a unit. A replacement axle, which comes pre-assembled with new CV joints and boots already greased and sealed, is fitted in reverse order. The hub nut is torqued to the manufacturer specification and the wheel is refitted. A test drive at various steering angles confirms the clicking is resolved before the vehicle is returned to the owner.
