Signs Your Car Drive Belt Needs Replacement in UAE
The serpentine drive belt is one of the hardest-working components in your engine. It runs continuously, powering multiple accessories from a single loop. UAE heat, dust, and high mileage make it especially prone to early wear. Knowing when to replace it can prevent a roadside breakdown.
1. Squealing or Chirping Noise
A high-pitched squeal from the engine bay when you start the car or accelerate is often the first sign of a worn or slipping drive belt. The noise is caused by the belt slipping on a pulley due to glazing, cracking, or incorrect tension.
2. AC Stops Working
Your air conditioning compressor is driven by the serpentine belt. If the belt snaps or jumps off, your AC will stop cooling immediately. In UAE summer temperatures, this is both uncomfortable and a safety issue.
3. Battery Warning Light
The alternator charges your battery via the drive belt. A slipping or broken belt means the alternator cannot generate electricity, and your battery will quickly drain. The battery or charging warning light will appear on the dashboard.
4. Power Steering Becomes Heavy
Many vehicles use a belt-driven hydraulic power steering pump. If the drive belt fails, turning the steering wheel becomes extremely heavy, especially at low speeds or when parking.
5. Visible Belt Wear or Cracking
Look at the belt during your next service. Signs of wear include cracks on the underside ribs, missing chunks, fraying edges, glazed or shiny surfaces, and squeaking that stops after wetting the belt.
6. Engine Overheating
On many cars, the water pump is belt-driven. A failed drive belt can cause the water pump to stop circulating coolant, leading to rapid engine overheating. This is a serious situation requiring immediate attention.
How Often to Check Your Drive Belt in UAE
Inspect the drive belt every 20,000 km or at each oil service. Replace it every 60,000-100,000 km. UAE heat and constant AC use accelerate belt wear, so err on the shorter interval.
