A clicking, vibrating, or clunking noise from under a car is often caused by a worn driveshaft or CV joint. Clicking Sound When Turning — CV Joint
A clicking or popping sound that occurs when turning at low speed (most noticeable when pulling out of a parking space in UAE malls or reversing) is almost always a worn outer CV joint. The outer CV joint on the front axle allows the wheel to turn and steer while transmitting power. When the CV boot tears, sand and grit enter the joint and wear away the ball bearings and cage. The clicking worsens over time and eventually the joint fails completely, preventing drive to that wheel. This should be diagnosed and repaired promptly.
Vibration at Highway Speed — Driveshaft Imbalance or U-Joint
A vibration that starts at a specific speed (often 80 to 120 km/h) and may increase or decrease as speed changes is typically caused by a driveshaft imbalance or a worn universal joint (U-joint) on the propeller shaft. UAE 4WD and SUV owners commonly experience this on rear propeller shafts after off-road use. A worn centre bearing on a two-piece propeller shaft causes similar vibration. This symptom should be checked by a mechanic as it can indicate an imminent shaft failure.
Clunking When Moving Off or Reversing
A single clunk or thud when engaging drive from neutral, or when switching from forward to reverse, points to a loose or worn U-joint on the propeller shaft, or a worn inner CV joint on a halfshaft. The clunk occurs because the worn joint has excess play that allows a sudden movement when the drivetrain loads up. If accompanied by vibration at speed, the diagnosis is almost certainly a worn U-joint or propeller shaft centre bearing. If clunking occurs only at low speed without vibration, the inner CV joint is more likely.
Grinding or Rumbling Under the Car
A continuous grinding or rumbling noise from the driveshaft area that varies with vehicle speed but not engine RPM is often a wheel bearing rather than a CV joint. Both can sound similar. The distinction: CV joint clicking is directional (worse turning one way), wheel bearing rumbling is constant and may get louder on one side when changing lanes. A mechanic with a stethoscope can isolate the source quickly.
UAE-Specific Driveshaft Wear Factors
UAE conditions accelerate driveshaft wear for several reasons. Desert sand is extremely fine and penetrates torn CV boots within days rather than months. UAE heat (45 to 50 degrees Celsius in summer) degrades rubber CV boots faster than in temperate climates, with boot cracking starting as early as 3 to 5 years on the original boots. Off-road driving on Dubai and Abu Dhabi desert tracks puts additional cyclic stress on all driveshaft joints. Inspect CV boots at every service interval and replace at the first sign of cracking or grease loss.
