Car Drum Brake Guide for UAE Drivers (2026)
Drum brakes remain on the rear axle of many popular UAE vehicles including commercial vans, 4WD workhorses, and economy cars. They are reliable, low-maintenance, and particularly effective as parking brake mechanisms. However, they require periodic inspection and adjustment to maintain proper function in UAE driving conditions.
How Drum Brakes Work
Inside each rear wheel, a rotating metal drum is attached to the wheel hub. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure forces two curved brake shoes outward against the inside of the drum. The friction between the shoes and drum slows the vehicle. The shoes are coated with friction material similar to disc brake pads, which wears over time and must be replaced when depleted.
Self-Adjustment in UAE Heat
Most drum brakes have automatic adjusters that compensate for shoe wear. In UAE, the adjuster mechanism can seize due to heat, corrosion, or brake dust buildup, preventing it from advancing the shoes as they wear. Symptoms of a seized adjuster include an increasingly long pedal travel before braking engages and a handbrake that needs more and more pulling to hold on a slope. Manual adjustment of the shoe clearance is required at a UAE garage, typically during each service.
Drum Brakes in UAE Off-Road Use
Vehicles used off-road in UAE encounter water and sand that can enter the drum. Water temporarily reduces drum brake effectiveness (the lining absorbs moisture), which is why vehicles emerging from wadi crossings should brake gently a few times to dry and warm the linings before relying on full braking. Sand entering the drum can cause rapid shoe and drum wear, and should be cleaned out when found.
Converting Drum to Disc in UAE
Some UAE 4WD owners convert rear drum brakes to disc brakes for improved performance and easier maintenance. Conversion kits are available for popular models including the Toyota HiLux and Land Cruiser 79 series. This conversion typically costs AED 1,500-4,000 including parts and labour at a UAE specialist.
