Car Electrical Accessories in UAE — What to Check Before Your RTA Test
Every vehicle registered in the UAE must pass an RTA roadworthiness inspection. While most drivers prepare by checking tyres, brakes, and lights, several electrical accessories are also checked during the inspection and are frequently the cause of unexpected failures. This guide covers the key electrical items to check before your next RTA test.
Horn
The horn is one of the most commonly failed items at UAE vehicle inspections. Inspectors test the horn as part of the standard check. A horn that does not sound, sounds weak, or sounds intermittently will result in a fail. Horn replacement is inexpensive at AED 80 to AED 250 depending on vehicle type and should be checked before attending the inspection.
Lights and Indicators
All headlights, tail lights, brake lights, reverse lights, and indicators must function correctly. DRLs that are factory-fitted must also be in working order. A blown bulb or faulty LED unit will cause a fail. Replace any defective bulbs before the inspection and ensure the hazard lights work correctly.
Wipers and Washer Fluid
Front windscreen wipers and washer fluid are checked during the RTA inspection. Worn wiper blades that smear or chatter across the screen may cause a fail. Washer fluid must be present and the pump must operate correctly when the washer button is pressed.
Electric Windows
Electric window operation is checked on some vehicles. If a window motor has failed and the window cannot be raised or lowered, this may be noted during the inspection. Ensure all electric windows function correctly before attending.
Fuel Door and Other Items
While the fuel door is not always formally inspected, inspectors may note any obviously damaged or missing body components. A damaged fuel door panel may trigger a comment. Ensuring your vehicle is in good overall condition before the inspection reduces the risk of an advisory note or fail for cosmetic damage.
