Types of Accessory Belts
The serpentine belt (also called the drive belt or multi-V belt) is a single continuous belt that winds around all the engine accessories via a system of pulleys. Belt Tensioner and Idler Pulleys
The serpentine belt system includes a tensioner pulley that maintains correct belt tension automatically, and one or more idler pulleys that route the belt around the engine. These pulleys have internal bearings that can wear out and produce a chirping, squealing, or rumbling noise. Bearing failure can cause the belt to slip off even if the belt itself is in good condition. The pulley bearings should be inspected when the belt is replaced.
